What's new

Have I finally found my ideal DE? Maybe

Just got my Muhle R-89 last night. My God its well-made. Flawless finishing, lovely-sized handle (as long as and slightly thicker than that of a Slim) and the Classic head is more nicely done and more robust. There's none of this zamak lineyness; just pure, smooth chrome. In-use, the balance is slightly different- head-heavy- but this seems natural after a few seconds. The quality is so far above that of a Merkur, for the same price, I cannot believe everyone isn't viewing this as the default modern razor, rather than an HD.

Thanks for posting this. I've been thinking about getting one of these.....

RAD kicking in.....must resist....must......resist.......it's just no use I'm going to have to order one.

I put off getting one for a year and spent quite a lot on Vintage Gillettes and other models. I'm glad I increased my knowledge, but probably wouldn't have bought anything else if I'd got an R89 first.

It just came from Muhle on Fri, so I'm assuming this is the new one, unless its old stock. Pls note, this is not the open-comb. There seems to be some confusion on the reviews section. I think its a bit more agressive than an HD, from what I can remember, but its been months since I got rid of my HD so I can't speak definitively. This looks like something you'd get in Harrods or Harvey Nicks and would probably expect to pay a lot for. One small but good thing....the internal routing on the handle shows a distinct, brassy sheen! Is this a ZAMAK-free HD?

Mine isn't so agressive. I used a brand-new Feather to test it and was pretty free with it and no problem, so that's re-assuring.

Next to this, my Gillettes definitely look like antiques
p.s. mine looks just as good as this, if not better. I gather their q.c. is excellent.

Very sexy indeed.:wink:Looks like a cross between an open comb and a safety bar head. I like!:smile:

I have a couple of razors with heads like this. To me they don't perform any better/different than any regular safety bar.

+1 on the Antiques, you can't go wrong with a vintage Gillette!

I'm not saying these are radically different or revolutionary or anything. An HD probably shaves as well, but to me, this is produced to the standards that all Merkurs should be, and never are, produced to. I object to having spent my money on an inferior product in the past.

That is a beautiful razor. Very futuristic. I love the fat bevelled under belly and the bar vents. Does it have great weight. Can you compare the weight to a vintage Gillette model?

From what I see with those alignment pins, there's no room for the blade to wiggle when you install it! I guess they fixed that previous flaw, is it right?

The handle feels like blown aluminium and most of the weight is in the head. This suits me as I tend to hold my DEs near the top of the handle, so less of the weight is wasted in my hand.

Yes their new R89 is great and absolutely a RAD killer. But I did find an even nicer one; the new R41 open comb. Using a merkur head but now looking and shaving like it should have been all along...

My merkurs are instantly downgraded as travel razors. Who cares for those anymore?
