Haircut advice-Regulation

Gents,
I could use a little advice on a haircut. I am looking to get one that is short, and I was contemplating a crew cut, but I am sort of concerned about looking like a skinhead! Essentially I need something that is suitable as a member of public safety-- now that I am qualifying as an Interior Firefighter, I want something that won't really 'pad' under my BA straps (boy do they hurt when they catch hair!) and not to mention looks relatively uniform (everyone wears it short).

I was thinking on the upper end of the crew-cut spectrum, but I can't really put numbers to pictures.

I am of a bigger build, roundish oval face, 6-2", 220lb, so nothing Emo!

I definitely want no bangs! I usually go for the #2 on the sides, and scissored on the top, but that is still too long for my taste--it grows out funny!

Any advice. Preferably before 12am tonight (going in the morning!)

Go to a BARBER, not stylist, and ask for this:

#2 on top, skin on the sides, medium fade. Professional but not too military-ish. That's basically the cut I've had for years.

It's a clean cut look and you can go a little longer between cuts without looking messy. Plus, it was really nice having that cut when we'd have to suit up in chem-gear or battle-rattle.

Stylist-- that will be a cold day somewhere warm...
Skin on the sides concerns me... any images?

Cheers!

Don't mind the cheesin, I was trying not to laugh in this picture due to off camera commentary...

Go to a barber and ask for a medium fade, number 3 on the sides and back, and square the back. If you don't like it, it will grow out in two weeks, and you can go back to the same barber and adjust.

Skin on the sides isn't bad at all. It's just clippers without the guard, unless you ask him to take a shavette to the sides, which I do. Just personal preference.

I can tell you from extensive experience that the haircut I suggested will not interfere with helmet straps at all.

That is a little short for me. What do you think the guy on the left is sporting? That's more my length on the side, maybe a tick longer on top.

I'd say a #1 or #2 on the sides. Try this:

Ask for a #1 or # 2 on the sides and finger length on top. This should be what you're looking for. The finger lenght means the barber will pinch the hair between his fingers and trip with scissors. So essentially, your hair length will only be as long as the width of the barber's fingers.

Alright that sounds like exactly what I am looking for. Thanks for your help!

Pretty simple cut. If that is all you need, I suggest you consider cutting your own hair. For around $50 you can get professional quality clippers and comb guards. In 4-5 cuts they will have paid for themselves. I have been doing a similar cut for 10 years or so. Really easy to get great results. No more driving to the barber and waiting to get a cut. I cut my hair once a week and it always looks fresh. I finance all my shaving needs with the money I save on cuts. The $15 -$20 a month I save cover it nicely.

The colonel looks like he's just gone #2 all over. Looks good on him. That said. Labowski's advice of #2 on the sides, finger length on top is pretty much what I do.

Go Air Force! I miss it! :001_cool:

You live in Rhode Island, plenty of good barbers in your state.
