"Grandpa, what was Aqua Velva like?"

A gent from Combe dropped in the aftershaves forum and confirmed that Aqua Velva is moving from the traditional glass to plastic bottles.

While the poster from Combe said there would be no change to the actual product, most Old Spice fans aren't happy with what happened to that icon when Proctor and Gamble moved it to plastic containers.

I remember Pete Rose pushing Aqua Velva. My dad read ads featuring Burgess Meredith extolling the "exclusive Aqua Velva club".

Since 1929 it went from mouthwash to aftershave, it's changed color, had a bittering agent added to keep servicemen from drinking it, and the bottle changed from square to the current shape. It'll probably be around after it moves to plastic, but if Combe gets purchased (there are rumors) who knows?

I know the Shavepocalypse gets kicked around a lot here, but what products do we use that our kids or grand-kids will only know as collectibles or dim memories, like we know Seaforth mugs, AS, soap and cologne?

I bought a big glass bottle of blue Aqua Velva yesterday (and a small bottle of Aqua Velva musk a couple of days ago). Hard to think of it as a collectible.

My parents thought I was crazy when I asked for a big ol' bottle of Aqua Velva for Christmas. Maybe I should have asked for a dozen!

I should have had respect for that bottle of Aqua Velva I got for Christmas many years ago. If only for the great story that went with it...

The guy who gave it to me said it was the best AS money could buy. Those around him accused him of putting on so much that he smelled like a French "lady of the evening."

To which he simply said "They don't smell like that..."

I miss that guy...

No, no they don't:lol:

And how would you know?

Which reminds me of a great story about one of my Grand Uncles, who very smugly informed his mom, my great grandmother who was very strict, that the neighor's son she thought so highly of had just spend the whole afternoon at a place where "ladies of the evening" sell their wares.

Of course, my great grandmother quickly surmised there was only one possible way he could have known this and let him have it.

So, enlighten me: Aqua Velva is your Tabac?

Old Spice is probably more our Tabac, but Aqua Velva is almost in the same category.

It's an aftershave that has been around since 1929, and is thought of as a very traditional part of shaving in the USA.

Basenotes has reviews of the scent.

I know the feeling about changes. On special occassions I use a little of glass bottled, gray stoppered Old Spice I had not used for years until starting my DE journey recently. I honestly can't grade how the scents compare, but just picking up the bottle spells quality to me!

I have a large glass av from b4 christmas and the wifey bought me another av iceblue for christmas... I may just hold onto the bottles now once I use'm up.

I have seen it in the plastic bottles before. I just figured that certain retailers would rather handle plastic instead of glass. I'll probally try to start stocking up then if it's all going to plastic.

I was out this weekend, and stopped by every store, including grocery stores, to check out the AV bottles. I knew some of you were already fretting over the possibility of plastic bottles, so I wanted to see what was in the stores now. All of the AV & AV Musk bottles I found were glass (just to make sure, I was walking up and thumping the bottles. My wife didn't even ask what I was doing. She just looked at me and said, "You're weird. And you spend too much time on that shaving forum, this is proof of it!").

Personally, I don't like AV (let the flaming begin), but I wanted to see what they were doing, as all shaving things interest me. I might pick up a glass bottle or two just to trade later on down the round when someone gets a hankering for "ye olde glass bottle" AV.

wow some guy on the inernet told you it was going to happen! for all you know i could be rocco siffredi.

there's needs to be a color coded "Shavepocalypse" scale. like the one for terrorism levels. we'd be at ultra triple red all the time.

Instead of color based threat levels, it would be blade based threat levels. The more blades in the cartridge atop the forum, the closer the shavepocalypse is at hand.
