Good shaving foams and brushless creams for non-wetshaver

At the risk of sounding sacreligious, I'm not a wetshaver. I tried it. I bought a 1956 Gillette Red Tip, a black porcelain Muhle shaving mug, and an Edwin Jagger medium superbadger brush with imitation ebony handle. The shaving soap was Tabac. I hate shaving. Its very boring to me, and I just want to get it over with as soon as possible. So after a few tries with all this equipment, I gave up and sold it all on eBay. However, I love the scent of all these wonderful shaving soaps. I thought Tabac was a great scent. All the commercial shaving foams are harsh and artificial. I'm looking for brushless shaving soaps and foams with character. I did buy Speick shaving foam and Proraso Shaving foam (Green Tea). I think I'm on the right track. Are there any more brushless soaps or foams that you can suggest?

You can use soaps without a brush but that would be no fun and almost pointless. Any cream can be used brushless, you just use more. I've seen Proraso cans of shaving cream, I don't use them but they are out there.

How many is a few tries??

It takes 2-3 months to develop repeatable good quality results with a DE razor. I think maybe you gave up much too quickly.

To answer the original question, Aveeno canned Gel is the best canned product I have run across. Nice almond smell as well. :tongue_sm

In the opinion of most of the board, most canned gels/ foams are garbage. Adding a better smell to them, does nothing to change their actual (low) performance.

Tabac makes a lathering cream; I believe the fragrance is the same as the soap. I've used the C&E creams, D. R. Harris Arlington cream, and C. O. Bigelow cream brushless and they all work very well.

I haven't heard of a lathering cream that cannot be used without a brush. Even without a brush, they still beat the stuffing out of a canned foam, gel, or brushless lather-less cream. It doesn't take any longer to use them than using a canned product.

And they work great with a cartridge razor as well as a DE.

If your in a hurry get Shave secret and a can of Yellow Can of Barbasol.

Do a North and South pass on your face rise hit the WH get dressed and then the AS and out the door you go.

Don't assume it's an all-or-nothing proposal. You can still use good quality creams and soaps with a cartridge razor and you can apply any cream you want directly to the face by hand.

I received a tube of Kiehl's brushless cream as a gift. When I'm pinched for time, I use it. Not quite the same as working up a warm lather in the scuttle, but it gets the job done pretty well.

I don't know if they still make it, but L'Occitane made a Cade brushless cream that was very good. You should check their site to see what they offer - I've never had a bad product from L'Occitane.

+1 - It took me months before I saw a DE work better than a MIII. I kept going back and forth. One day I just realized that the DE was getting BBS and I felt comfortable using it. I don't know why, but it was kind of like a light switch. I still use the MIII occasionally when I'm in a real hurry, but it is now a little more irritating to my face than my DE.

+1 - I got ~90% of my shaving improvement from using better preparation techniques, and better quality soaps and creams, applying them by hand, even while I was still using a cartridge.

Lucky Tiger has a couple of different ones. One is under their Premium line and the other is under their Barbershop line. I really like the old school Molle under the Barbershop line. It is a true brushless cream. It will not lather with a brush.

I also tried and like the Grooming Lounge Beard Destroyer cream.

The regular Proraso canned foam isn't bad at all. For brushless use, I like Kiss My Face and Trader Joe's creams the best. You might also try Sheffield brushless cream if you can find it locally; it's cheap and does the job well.

Wet shaving has nothing to do with what razor you are using. It's all about the soap or cream and brush and... water.

If you like Tabac, use it.

It works darn well with a cart razor too.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Kiss My Face or Nancy Boy. Either can be used without a brush. KMF comes in several varieties and is available at Whole Foods and some health food stores, as well as online. NB has two varieties, and is available from the Nancy Boy website or their SF-area shops.

I agree with Phil that you are still wet-shaving as long as you are using water and a blade of any kind, cartridges included. If you aren't using a brush, that's a personal choice.
