Glycerin USP

Hi all,

I picked up a bottle of Glycerin USP from Walmart for a couple bucks to add to my lather, as neither the soap nor the cream that I have includes glycerin, and they ran out of glycerin soap. The stuff comes in a 4ish oz bottle and is a clear syrup.

At first I just added a few drops to my lather, but I wasn't too sure it was making a difference. Well, my face had been drying out during prep time inbetween my shower and my actual shave, so I decided one day to just slap some of this stuff onto my stubble immediately after my shower, and let it sit while I prepped. I have tried a couple pre-shave oils and haven't had any good results, so I just figured, "What the heck? It's not oil, and it ends up in my lather anyway."

At first I noticed the stuff gives a really slight tingly warming feeling on my face, especially around my lips. It also tastes a bit like honey. It seemed oily, but it rinsed off almost immediately when I splashed my face in preparation for the first lather application.

The shave ended up being noticably better! Now I use the stuff before every shave. I don't think it provides much, if any, added lubrication to the shave, but it seems to keep my hair and skin soft and moisturized and ready for the shave. I like it a lot!

Does any one else have any experience with this stuff? Have you tried it as a pre-shave application? Or maybe one of you has some feedback as to whether this stuff should be used in this manner? I couldn't find much information about it online, and the bottle says almost nothing about it's use. It doesn't even have any ingredients, which leads me to believe that it's pure USP grade glycerin. I found it among the vitamins.

What do you think?

Regards,
Tony

+1 on the uberlather. I thought I read somewhere not to apply it directly to skin. I will check the bottle tonight. I bought mine from Stop & Shop pharmacy for a few more dollars. ($6.00) I don't know if there is any difference in manufacture, but I notice the difference in slickness of my lather.

I've applied it like the OP does. Yeah, it's a very good moisturizer. And dirt cheap.

USP glycerin is a pure compound. Only one "ingredient."

I believe the bottle says to dilute it 1 part to 2 for 3 parts water then apply to skin.

I add it to my alcohol-based aftershaves - just a drop or two per application - to add some moisturizing to the mix.

I use the Musgo glycerin soap for the same reason. Sometimes I just wash my face with it and then shave. Often times though I'll lather up my face with the mrglo then put a hot towel over it for a couple minutes or so. I think I get better shaves when I prep this way, and I think my face feels better afterwards.

I use it as the only pre-shave and let it be on my face while I make my lather. Then I rinse it with warm water. My skin gets very soft.

Awesome to know I'm not the only one who's tried it and liked it. :biggrin1:

I'll try diluting it next time. I felt like I might have been using too much, although the bottle's still pretty much full.

Have read it in a few places (and saw in a Geofatboy video) that Glycerin is also used after washing your brush to condition it.

I guess as long as it's not harmful to not dilute it... I was going to get it as a part of a pre shave, but if you can use just that maybe it's good. Can also try one mixed and see how you like it. The essential oils are fun if you want to add fragrance to it.
