What's new

Gillette Tech- what is its modern day equivalent?

I once shaved with a Gillette Tech and got a couple of very nice, comfortable shaves. Since then I have gone through, an HD, Progress, 2xSuperspeeds, Slant, 11c. Only the 11c has given me comfortable shaves. Does anyone know if there is a new equivalent, in terms of aggressiveness - or lack of it - of the Gillette Tech?

The Gillette 7 o'clock razor is a tech type. I have never tried it but it's only $7 with free shipping. It might be worth a try.

If your're looking for something that shaves just like a Tech, why not use a Tech?
There are pleanty of varieties in Finish, head, and handle type to make collecting them a worthy hobby in and of itself.
I guess I'm just trying to understand the goal here, so that the advice given is helpful to you.
If it's a mild shaver you're looking for that is NOT a Gillette, then I'd say the Goodfella for sure.
It's every bit as mild as the mildest Tech I've ever used.

Lord make a couple of reasonable substitutes.:001_smile Check out their web site.:wink2::wink2:

Correct. Lord makes two different models of razor:

-One with a Tech like head, which is almost an exact clone of the late model Techs. In fact Gillette stills sells a Tech for Indian markets, but if I were a betting man, I would guess that this Tech is actually manufactured for Lord on their behalf. The two razors are almost completely identical.

-One with a Merkur like head, which resembles, and likely shaves like a Merkur classic/ 1904 model.

Both of these Lord razors are well built, and fairly mild razors. They are nice budget items. Although my personal preferance would be for a more substantial handle, as the aluminum/ plastic handles make the razor fairly head heavy.

I would say DE89L one very fine razor.

In my opinion, the DE89L (and very similar Muhle R-89) is one of the finest, if not the finest razor on the market today. If you want a new razor, you will be hard pressed to find anything that will match it in terms of balance, weight, finish, or overall shave quality.

Thanks for all your responses, I am looking forward to receiving more. As answer to one question, I am asking this question as I am indeed looking for a mild razor, as close to a tech as possible. I would rather buy new. I haven't managed to find a supplier of Lord razors in the UK though.

Well then the EJ is probably not what your looking for. I mean, it is similar in construction in that it is a multi-piece razor, but it is not considered mild like a Tech.

Pureslab (iKon razors) has produced a head, "Deluxe" model, which is very similar to the Tech head. He also has a head very similar to the NEW. These just came out though, so I am not sure if anyone has tried them yet. Also they are pricey.

When you are looking for a razor as mild as the Techs I doubt that the Lord razors are what you are looking for; they are not overly aggressive, certainly not, but still a lot more than the Techs are. This is probably even more so with the Feather portable; I never used one but from what I have understood from other members is that it is a lot more aggressive than what you seem to be looking for.

The 1904 or classics from Merkur; they are at about the same level as the Lords in terms of aggressiveness.

Really mild are the Wilkinson Sword classic (a Treet 2-piece razor) and the Weishi TTO. They are both not as well build as the Techs or any of the razors mentioned before.

When you liked the Merkur 11C why not go for a 3-piece open comb; Merkur has the 15C, the 25C and the '1904' OC. Mühle has the R-41; same head, better made.

I just received my EJ DE89L, and have used it for about two weeks. I find that the shave it gives is just like my 40s Super Speed, but the EJ feels better in the hand. Had a aluminum Tech but only used it once or twice before selling it. I honestly don't remember that it was so different other than lighter.

The Tech design, it seems to me, is often mimicked but never really duplicated. I've never encountered a razor that feels quite like my Tech. There are others that try to imitate but none really nail down the Tech feel like the real thing. I think what makes the Tech so unique is that it can work well at a variety of blade angles. I've never really encountered another razor that you can "fudge" the blade angle as much and still get a good shave.
