My updated rating of vintage Gillettes

I have posted my rating of vintage Gillette razors in the past, but that was when I was still learning them.

Now, after months of using vintage Gillettes exclusively, I think I am ready to update my rating. This is only based on the razors I own. Some results may be skewed by only having a single razor of its type that may not be performing as it should.

So, here's my highly subjective list. It's based on performance, aesthetics, and just personal preference:

1. 1956 Flare tip Superspeed. Very comfortable, efficient, and I love the aesthetics.
2. 1960 Tech. Just as comfortable and efficient, and a joy to use after I paired it with a substantial modern handle.
3. 1966 Flare tip Superspeed. Just as good as the earlier model in performance, but rattles (Gillette changed the head design in 1962 or so).
4. 1951 Black tip "40's style" Superspeed. A little (only a little) more efficient than any of the above razors, but honestly I just don't like the 40's style design as much.
5. 1967 Flare tip. It shaves as well as any other Flare tips, but it also has the later rattly head and the black resin aluminum handle makes it a little lighter.
6. 1953 40's Style Superspeed. This may be the sample variation since all 40's type heads seem to be the same, but it's a little more aggressive than the rest.
7. 1972 Super 84 adjustable. I think this is the best Gillette adjustable razor. Slightly more efficient than the Slims, very maneuverable.
8. 1971 Super 109 adjustable.
9. 1962 Slim. I am still trying to "solve" it. A beautiful mechanical piece, but I don't always get the best shaves with it.
10. Pre-war Tech with triangular slots. It's pretty aggressive for a Gillette (mid-aggressive in the overall scheme). I used to be a fan of aggressive razors, but grew to appreciate the comfortable efficiency of vintage Gillettes.
11. New Long Comb. Even more aggressive. Not a daily driver for me.

I used the Vintage this am, believe I got on BTS from Member.

Pre-War Fat Handle Tech, it is poor mans Wolfman.♥️

IMHO it is awesome Razor with Great Blade.

IMHO Razor is Blade holding too, with Gap, Cutting Angle, and Blade exposure.

If you have right tool for your face, and beard.

Now all you need is New Sharpe Blade to get great shave.

Love Gillette vintage razors and your list is pretty neat. Thanks for posting. I am using a birth year Gillette (1951) much to my enjoyment.

Gillettes are not my favorite. I prefer non Gillette vintage DE and SE but if I pick top 5 Gillettes in terms of shaving quailty, here's my list

1. British New RFB 44
2. British New RFB 77
3. British Goodwill
4. Hybrid Tech
5. British Superspeed Red Tip

I find the OPs list to be upside down. The Slim open to 9 is one of the best USA vintage shavers for me. The NEW LC isn’t my favorite NEW. But for that list, it’s also near the top. Of course that list doesn’t specify any British Gillettes. Nor any open combs besides the NEW LC.

@rasoirdangereux list is more like it. Except I think the two-piece #77 RFB shaves a wee bit better than the three-piece #44. At least if the #44 has the stock handle. When I put a #44 head on a heavy stainless handle, it goes up the list a bit! 🏆

Lately I have been really enjoying a NEW Standard. I had shied away from that razor for many years due to reports of it being aggressive, having a tendency to bite, and reported blade alignment issues. But, I have really been enjoying super close shaves from that one!

My undated 40s style is my favorite. I've used my black tips (both steel and aluminum) and black-handled flare tips most, and I appreciate the little bit of extra weight from the 40s. I still need to try my early flare tip, which I believe should have a milder gap but even more weight.

I also have a red tip. It's a really nice razor but the plate is so worn on the handle, and it had so much verdigris when I got it, that I tend not to use it often. Oddly, the head is nearly immaculate!

I don't like 3-piece razors much. Adjustables are just OK, not great, the head is too chunky for me.

The more modern the razor, the less aggressive the shave. This was my assessment after doing something very similar to what you are doing. I believe I actually shaved with each razor head made by Gillette, sampling from the 1980 Travel Tech, 1938-70’s Techs, the different variations of TTO’s, the different Open Combs, all the way back to the Double Ring.
I did discover preferences in practically every variation along the way. From appearance to performance, there are justifications to actually keep and use almost every major variation, but one person’s preference may differ from another person. Work through the 102/102A
106/126
The NEW variants
The Goodwills
Some like the 2-piece over the 3-piece

The Techs are actually a little different over time.

Do the TTO’s
The Open Comb TTO: Aristocrat/Sheraton/Senator

The Safety Bar TTO:
1940-41
48-50/51
50-60
60-70
70+

And of course, the Adjustables
