Gillette old type? What is this?

I picked this up today, plan on cleaning it up and trying it out. 30 bucks at an antique store. Not sure of I got a good deal or not. Is this a gillette old type? $image.jpg

I am sorry I do not know, I buy what I like, and is in my budget, or sometimes over my budget.

Here is everything cleaned up a little more. As you can see, everything isn't in AMAZING shape, but not bad for how old it is.

We are somewhat forbidden from estimating values for members as this is not a appraisal sight. As members, we are encouraged to use the BST and other sources to place monetary values on our items at our own discrestion. That is why the BST rules state that sellers are not to remove the selling price of their items. Mike was just saying this is a gentlemanly way. I am just expanding for him.

Got it... I didn't realize I was asking someone to break this rule! Sorry guys.

Almost looks like Gillette had some military set components still lying about and cobbled together some civvie Khaki sets.

That's not all that far off of likely, really. These leather soft-roll sets are the exact same setup as the Khaki and Navy soft-roll sets. I'm fairly sure that the leather ones only showed up after they'd started doing those military sets. Below is a larger version of the page from the 1918 catalog that Achim's got inset in his photo collage above, and IIRC I don't think they were around all that much earlier than that. So while it probably wasn't a case of "left over parts," they really are the "consumer's version" of those sets.

There's also this other advertising piece for this set from an uncertain date that Achim has on his site (click to see it larger over there):

Wow, thanks for the pics. I cleaned it all up a bit more since posting the last pictures. I guess the mirror isn't indestructible, it has some pitting! But after what, 90-100 years, I would say that it looks pretty damn good. One side is still near perfect. I'm starting to really like this set I found. Might try shaving with it tomorrow. Who knows, maybe it will become my travel razor. Otherwise, I was thinking of selling it. I can't decide. We will see how it shaves! There was some gross weird green gunk everywhere on the inside of the leather. I'm not sure what it is, but I got it all out. I didn't even notice the mirror when buying this.
