What's new

Gillette New

So I've decided to collect vintage razors now, with plans to actually use them as well, and was told a Gillette New is a must have. Where do you guys recommend looking for one? I've checked ebay and most of the prices are ridiculous or I don't have the patience to battle back and forth on bidding. I'm not looking for mint, but minimal brassing would be ideal. Any vendors that deal in just vintage razors? (At decent prices. SWMBO is still settling in to the idea of me "needing" multiple razors.)

Check out Technici's ebay page. He is a member here. You should be able to pick up a user grade NEW for about $25.

BTW, the NEW is one of my favorite DE razors. I have the long comb with common bar handle in gold. Excellent shaver. :)

Or you can keep an eye out for member Krona Kruisers replates. If you are fast on the draw, he has News on B/S/T for about $35, and they are like brand new. :)

The NEW tends toward brassing: mostly they were well-loved and show it. Most were plated with a thin gold wash, which did not wear well. There were some finished in more durable nickel or chrome, but they are rarer.

So I mostly ignore exposed brass: replating is always an option, as long as there is no pitting. The main thing is to decide if the NEW works for you. Give it some time: my first round with the NEW lasted a week, and I was unconvinced. A few months later I tried it for another week, and I have rarely left it idle since. Anyway if you do like it, look into replating. If not, you can pass it along on the BST.

Speaking of the BST, you might post a WTB there when you are able. It looks like you will have the requisite 45 days toward the end of October?

Meanwhile you could look around locally. It can be fun. This time last year I spotted a couple of NEW razors in a shop in Bywater, on Dauphine St I think. The shop owner thought they were basically junk: cracked handles and that sort of thing. But she did not want much for them, and they could have been turned into decent user-grade razors. Who knows? Maybe they are still there.

Look at antique stores in the glass cases. I just picked one up in original box for less than $15. About to post pics now.

Oops, looks like I picked up an old. But that doesn't mean there aren't News to be had.

The NEW is indeed a must have for any vintage razor collection. The question is: which one? The long comb, short comb, Deluxe, English LC, English LC with the raised flat bottom, English #77 / #88 2-piece, or the English Richwood (there are several others).
Mr-Razor's site is a good place to fuel your RAD.:thumbup1:

The most popular is the ordinary USA long comb, which looks like this (although I prefer the common bar handle):

Thanks! I bought one of them last night and eagerly look forward to using it!
Congrats! nice little razors!

I picked up a grungy old bar-handled 'New' sometime ago on ebay for about $4. Needed a bit of TLC, but I was rewarded with a nice razor for my clean-up efforts.

It looks great! The one I ordered has a couple green spots on the handle, but is in great shape otherwise. I'll carefully clean it up once I get it in, so as to keep as much of the gold plating as possible.

I have dealt with Technici on Ebay with entire satisfaction and recommend him highly. I didn't know he was a B&B member. I can't find him on member list; am I spelling something wrong? My bad! It's spelled Techichi!

If you get a NEW that has major plating loss, send it to Krona Kruiser here on the board, and have him nickel plate it. TRUST ME, it will come back looking spectacular and will be ready for another 80 years of use :) Mine did, and I will have him plate my Fatboy sometime!

Common on ebay for $10-$20 for user grades with case. Lots to choose from. Tend to be mild but good shavers if you drop in a Feather . One of my favorites.
