What's new

New here

Hello all, I've been browsing here for the past few weeks as I started my wet shaving journey. I hope this is alright to post my questions here in this section of the forum. I was gifted a van Der hagen tto years ago and sparsely used it, just recently picked up another one from Walmart maybe 3 weeks ago and have been using it since. My shaves have not been terribly comfortable or close, but it worked and at the price point compared to cartridges I wasn't going to complain. I purchased a starter kit from stirling soap based on the relatively good feedback they receive here, and my shave immediately improved, however I am looking for a razor that will last a lifetime and not have to worry about it. The vintage gillette tech receives all kinds of love but finding one in good condition with all the plating in tact while having the brass head is proving difficult, and the gamechanger 68 and 84 could be had for a similar price point. What would you experienced shavers here recommend?

First, welcome to the forum.

If you decide to get a Razorock razor like the Game Changer. I would start with the .68 and get the lightest handle available. My recommendation would be to get the titanium handle. It's cheaper to buy with the razor than to purchase by itself. When shaving, get used to maintaining the best cutting angle. This will require you to shave more with your shoulder than with your wrist.

There are other razors worth checking out. The Rockwell 6s/6c, the Henson, or even the Karve Bison.

Welcome to B&B. You already have a cool username. The answers you get here on this thread will help but take some time and do some research here. This forum has been around for a long time and if you use the search feature creatively, you will find more information than you really need. Oh. And just accept that shaving isn't just a grooming chore for you anymore, but a hobby.

Get a Tech. It doesn’t have to be pretty. I have 2; one cost $5 at a flea market, the other was free.

For the best shave you can get, pick up a Schick injector. An E, G or J model with Chinese-made Schick blades in the yellow package cannot be topped.

Welcome to B&B. You may have already read a lot about the hype regarding Henson Razors and for good reason.

They're well-engineered, you can pick an aggression level that suits your needs, and it won't "break the bank".

If you research Henson, you'll hear everything from it being a razor with "training wheels" for newbies to it being a "daily driver" razor, especially since the "mild" option is so smooth to use. Both sentiments are true, I have one and I use it regularly.

Thanks for the info, I've looked into rockwell and Henson but haven't yet seen the karve bison. Will check it out for sure.

Thanks mate I appreciate it lol, and yeah I will definitely scour the forum before deciding on something. My stirling razor will do the job perfectly fine for now, I just prefer to have items of high quality that I can pass down in the future. Ever since I got my shipment from stirling I realized immediately shaving is no longer an annoying chore that I have to do, it is a relaxing hobby that I will enjoy for years to come.

No problem. Keep an eye on our Buy Sell Trade forum on here. It will be a while before you can sell there, but you are free to buy. I've probably purchased 90% of my razors and brushes there over the years.

RR Cyber with the HD Hollow Handle and a Super Formula soap is an excellent first order. GC is also great and stainless. The 76 is amazing. Never used the 68. Titanium handle is deluxe.

It’s a pity those VDH TTOs are the entry point razor for many. They are pretty bad.

I went to a flea market the other day in search of a tech and the only razor I found was some form of straight razor, lol not my lucky day. Will definitely keep my eye out, and the injectors look very interesting

The cyber looks very similar to the henson, both attractive razors. Yeah the VDH was not great, which i knew, but definitely won't be using that ever again lol
