What's new

Gillette New (?)

The NEW is my favourite Gillette razor, a mean whisker whacker :thumbup1:

You got a great deal too, with the case & all.

Yep, that is a long comb version of the NEW, looks to be in very nice shape. As his ad states, they're relatively mild shavers even though they look a little scary. That's just the way they made razors back then! Gillette didn't begin with safety bars until the very late 1930's.

That case is a "Red and Black" case you may or may not have read about. And the handle is referred to as a common bar handle. Nice catch, enjoy it!

Nice find, I don't have a New but I do have a New Improved and a couple Olds. They are great shavers. Pay attention to your technique and prep and you will be fine. It's nice to shave with a vintage piece of history.:thumbup1:

NEWs are great shavers, nice score. No real difference from what you're used to in terms of technique or handling, but depending on what you've been using you might find it more aggressive. The open comb is usually suited to heavier beards, or beards with a few days growth, but you can still use them just fine as an everyday shaver.

Interestingly I've found open comb to be better than solid bar at snagging very short, coarse stubble in difficult spaces. I am doing a 2 razor shave these days-- Gillette Tech under the nose and on the round part of the chin, Gillette Old Type on the neck, face and wherever there is stubborn short stubble the Tech can't get to. It's true that the open comb is good for getting rid of heavier growth, but with the right care it can be used to get into tight spots with stubborn short stubble and eliminate that.

The other important thing to remember not to push down and to let the blade do the work.

I really, really, really like shaving with my gold NEW. I'm getting ready to ship it off to buddydog for a well deserved bit of replating.

It arrived today, and it is BEAUTIFUL!:biggrin1:
I will shave with it soon, right now the slant is hogging all my attention.

You got an excellent deal, Congratulions! The New looks incredible. The case is a little beat up, but who cares. The razor in that condition by itself is worth more than what you paid for it.

The New is an excellent shaver... I'm sure you'll be happy with it. :thumbup1:
