gillette black handle

Can any of you fellas tell me anything about the blackhandle razor? Is it a mans razor or ladies? I havent seen anyone speak about this razor on this forum. Was it not one of the better Gillettes back then or has it fallen out of favor down through the years.I picked it up for $ 5.00 bucks a yardsale. So,any info will be appreciated. Thanks!

I think you're talking about the Gillette super adjustable or "black beauty". It is an adjustable tto razor made by Gillette and comes in long and short handles. I have one and it shaves great!

Its the short handle,so I thought it might be for women. Also,it doesnt have any adjustment features.

The wiki is always a good place to start: Gillette_Black_Handle_Super_Speed.

The black handle super speed overlapped with the Lady Gillette and the Knack, so I would say it was mostly marketed toward men. But Gillette razors have always been substantially the same for either gender. I know ladies who grew up shaving their legs with flare tip super speeds, probably handed down when their fathers decided to buy a newer model. And there are gents here who like the 1960s-70s Lady Gillette for its long handle.

The black handle gets less attention that the earlier models: 1940s or the various colored tips. Nevertheless it shaves well. Give it a try.

Through most of the 1950-1970s, I would put the Super Speed in the middle of the Gillette range. It was heavier and more complicated than a Tech, but less so than an adjustable and was not offered with gold plating. You can see this by looking at the range available in the mid-to-late 1970s (photos by Achim). The Tech is very basic: no case, one blade, and no instructions. The Super Speed has a blade pack and some instructions on the back, but no case. The Adjustable has a case, instructions, and a blade pack. This was probably meant to create a "good, better, best" sequence for consumers.

All black razors are the result of top secret research by the U.S. Government.

All black razors are to be regarded in the same way as you regard black helicopters and the men in black (MIB) that you did not see.
