Geo F Trumper vs Crabtree-Evelyn

Hi guys,

This is my first actual post - I have been surfing here for a number of months~!

Just wanted to know what you guys think..

I'm relatively new to wet shaving and I usually use Crabtree-Evelyn and Proraso shaving soaps.

I was told that Trumper is way better than proraso in terms of quality, however no one seems to be able to tell me how C&E compares to Trumper.

I was looking at getting Dr Harris shaving soap/cream but the store person told me that Dr Harris is on par with TOBS and that Trumper trumps both of them (excuse the pun).

Can anyone shed some light on how C&E compares to Trumper, TOBS and Dr Harris...and which company you thinks makes the better soaps?

Thanks in advance! :001_smile

DR Harris still uses a tallow formulation in their soaps and at this point is far better than the other two. C&E, Trumpers, and Tobs are OK soaps but are not really top tier performing products. The scents are really nice though.

Mabye someone can chime in, but I think most of the British brands are made by the same company. I've been told by a vendor that they are all manufactured by a single vendor, perhaps Creightons?

The current reformulation of Trumper soap been getting terrible reviews on this site for over a year. Here's one thread, but there's many more like it. I have a prior Trumper reformulation (not tallow) and, while good, it's still not quite up to the performance of Harris. Never tried C&E or TOBS, but I have 5 Harris soaps.

In my experience, not really. I'd put the new Trumpers behind the two.

Good to know about the C&E. I would suspect that like almost all the other British houses save D.R. Harris they are made by the one soap manufacturer now. More's the pity. C&E Nomad was pretty good. I have a cake from three or four years ago my wife bought me as a Christmas gift. Very decent soap and superior to the old Trumper tallow I had. It was also better than the Eucris I bought when it first came out. Eucris with the added cocoa butter lathers better for me than Trumpers vaunted tallow version. You know the one. Soap base and shave soap base. I gave to a chap in England who reported great success but I could never get it to make more than maudlin lather. I have no idea what formulation any of them are using these days. I will say the Trumper soaps aren't a patch on D.R. Harris.

Cheers, Todd

DR Harris is a fantastic soap- I hear complaints about GFT and C&E frequently (especially since the new formulation). I don't hear much negatives about DRH.
I am currently using DRH and I love it.

I just dropped into the C&E store near me on the weekend and was rather taken back by their smells (in a negative way). Sadly, none of them appealed to me.

Its interesting to hear about the reformulations and single manufacture for a number of brands etc. appreciate the information.

Travis.

Creams: Trumper's > D.R. Harris > TOBS
Soaps: D.R. Harris > Trumper's

I haven't tried any TOBS soaps so I don't know if it's any better than Trumper's.

Thanks for the responses guys.
I used a cade soap today... nice smell but the shave was awful! ended up cutting myself! LOL I also had enough of my C&E Nomad and think it needs disposal on the basis of smell alone... the lather is actually ok. sigh.
I am thinking I might try a couple of creams in the interim... I have a few samples of Dr Harris and have ordered a sample pack of Trumpers.

Harris is the cream of the crop (so to speak) of the soaps you mention. Trumpers Coconut cream is outstanding but I haven't seen many positive reviews of their soaps. I think Proraso is a very good soap too. TOBs creams are behind all of them for me.

Thanks mate. Yeh harris seem quite good! The almond made me gag... But the smell of rose lavender and Arlington were exquisite!
