fromm hair shaper or parker sr2

If having to choose between these to options for a shavette , which one would you choose and why ?

as you can see from a prev. thread I was thinking of using a durham duplex ( not so much now ) I realy would like to try this type of shaving out , but with limited funds ( who would ever think that pregnant women eat so much ) price is a issue , any advice , pointers is appreciated

I haven't tried either of those, but I do have a Sanguine which is very similar to the Parker. It has a VERY steep learning curve. I got lots of nics and weepers from it.

I have the Sanguine too, which appears to be the same as the Parker. It works great for me, though I prefer a traditional straight. I've tried the Fromm and Dovo as well, and MUCH prefer my Sanguine. Once you get the hang of it, you should get no more weepers or nicks than from a DE, and less irritation. A bonus is that you can lather up and do practice passes with the blade removed, to get comfortable with various grips, and moving the razor across your face.

Honestly, I would say neither.

If forced to chose, the answer should be the Fromm, as the longer thicker blade would better approximate an actual straight. However, the Hair Shaper blades have one major downfall: they have not one, but two spike points. That's very dangerous as a beginner.

Of the Shavettes that use a 1/2 DE blade, the Parker is one of the best available. It has a decent amount of weight behind it, and solid construction; however the learning curve will be steep as already mentioned: expect a lot of blood for the first couple dozen shaves.

Which Fromm are you looking at? They have one at Sally Beauty Supply for $5. Is that the one? I'd be willing to let you try out my Sanguine if you want.

It looked to me that some some of the blades had a rounded edge, but that's just form the pics online.

also concerning the hair shaper blades , would it be possible to just blunt the two spike points ?

Just ran across a Sally's on my way home form school today and picked up a Fromm. Got it and a 5 pack of blades for $9. The corners are slightly rounded on the blades which intrigues me. Overall though, this thing is junk and probably not worth the $5 I paid for it. Gonna give it a shot tonight or tomorrow.

Did a pass with the Fromm earlier and... not bad. It has a longer, thicker blade than the Sanguine, making it more comparable to a straight. For the $9 with the extra blades, it's really not all that bad.

The blades I got had somewhat rounded corners. The Sanguine uses a half DE blade which has some pretty gnarly corners.

Just impulse-purchased myself a Fromm and some blades, expect either a rave review or a 911 call on Monday!

I started with the Fromm and moved from there to a regular straight. I found it a quite nice shaver for a shavette style and a great learning tool before moving to straights.

Even with the somewhat rounded corners on the Fromm/Personna hair shaper blades, I still managed to jam one of those blade corners into my check by my lower lip in my very early days of straight shaving (yes, it left a scar. ).

So do be very very careful. Those points can be very sneaky.

PS: I can't resist the allure of straights. I sold off everything a few months ago, but this week bought a Weck Sextoblade: a beefy, more robust version of the Fromm Hair Shaper that has scales much like a regular straight.
