Frank Shaving strop as a beginner/practice strop?

I am looking to get something inexpensive for my first strop (but still good enough to actually use), and I found a set that includes a strop by FS, and a couple of other "goodies."

I don't plan to use this for more than 6-12 months, so I'm not concerned with longevity. If nothing else, I could probably use it for Crox or diamond spray.

Has anyone used the FS strop? Experiences? Recommendations? If anyone has used this strop, I would really like to hear your experience.

Thanks!

I got moves like Jagger
30cm is only 12 inches.
You might want to look at a Big Daddy (I have one) or Big Momma strop from Star Shaving.

If you have never used a strop I would strongly suggest that you use the folded newspaper method for a month or more before investing in any leather. I still use newspaper occasionally as it gives a very nice finish to an edge

When you can get to the point of not slicing newspaper you can then move on to an inexpensive practice strop like the one sold by Larry (whipped dog)

i tried this and it did not work for me/my straight. Maybe it was my technique but I'm not sure. I stropped at least 100x too. then tried to shave with the razor and OUCH, felt really rough

The reason I'm asking is actually twofold- The set includes the FS strop, a Gold Dollar 300, a case, and a razor stand. And, it's about $27 shipped... I was hoping that someone here had experience with the FS strop. I'll try posting the question in the Strop section under Straight Razors too. Thanks for the input. I have tried the newspaper method, and I'm not sure of the results. I wrapped a newspaper around a book, and I can't tell if it's making a difference...

I am reposting this from my original question in the General Discussion area...

You need to wrap your newspaper around a towel bar and pull it tight like you would a leather strop.

I have had bad experiences with "imported" strops. I've never used the Frank Shaving one you mention but another post in thread talks about how short they are which would make me turn away from them.

Larry at Whipped Dog sells several strops that fall into what you are looking to spend if you are determined to get leather. All of them from the $10 travel strop up to his finest are all good quality (workmanship and leather) and long enough to be a "real" strop not something you will cut your fingers trying to use.

You might want to ask a moderator to move this thread into the strop forum rather than start a duplicate thread and have a mod delete your duplicate posts

Go to your first post and click the little triangle with the ! in it (lower left corner below the thread). This will bring up the "report" window and you can ask that the thread be moved. Only the OP can request this so you will need to do it.

To our OP. Your two threads have been merged and now reside in the Strop Forum.

Thanks.

Thank you! I will remember this in the future.

Also, thank you to turtle. I think I may look into Whipped Dog or a Filly from Rup Razor, or maybe an Illinois #206...

For the price I might give it a shot or you can also price strops from Starshaving and thewellshavedgentleman.com as well. He has a practice strop very reasonable and so does larry at Whippeddog.com Whippeddog and thewellshavedgentleman would be my picks.
