Forgotten TV products

Anyone remember the Veg-O-Matic? Or Ayds candy?

Which ones do you remember from days gone by, that got tons of airplay, then disappeared off the face of the earth?

I do remember the Veg-O-Matic. I have eaten Ayds candy. What about the Ronco Pocket Fisherman? Tab cola? The Ginsu knife? Cuts through a tin can, yet can still slice a tomato?

As recently as a few years ago, I used to see a lot of late-night infomercials advertising get-rich quick real-estate schemes ... but I'm not seeing them so much anymore.

  • Buy houses with no money down.
  • Buy houses by just paying the back-taxes.
  • Buy houses with the ad-promoters money, all you have to do is find the listings.
  • Run classified ads in thousands of newspapers at the same time, make about $10 profit on each one.
  • Sublet hundreds of apartments to college students, make $50~$100 profit on each one.

The Ronco ash tray with a little fan that sucked the smoke into its base.
I had one of those ... it works as advertised. What they don't tell you is that after a few days use, the internal filter becomes so saturated with tar that it smells up the whole room worse than if you hadn't used it in the first place.

BOSCO chocolate flavor for milk, beeman's gum with a golden drop of retsin, vibrasonic ,the echo chamber deluxe ,for under your dashboard

Remember Mr. Microphone? "Hey good looking - be back to pick you up later."

Talk about a great commercial - I'll bet that everyone old enough to have seen it remembers that line.

That was the product I was going to mention. Those things were advertised for years. "And boy does it catch fish!" We had two of them.

Actually, many of the Popeil products are still being sold. The Pocket Fisherman and GLH are still being sold by Ronco. They also sell something similar to a Veg-O-Matic and the original Veg-O-Matic is still for sale in stores.

I belive the "Ayds" candy was actually some sort of diet supplement and/or appetite suppressant-at least that's how I remember it. I've spoken to my wife, who doesn't remember this product being advertised and insists that I'm making it up, just to have a laugh at her expense. I've mentioned the "Ayds" diet plan on several occasions and she insists that there was no such thing-that I'm just trying to get her goat.

On a somewhat related note, I used to work with a woman, who had the misfortune of being named "Lavetria". I was at work one day when my wife called and asked if I didn't use to have a co-worker by that name. When I responded that I did and asked why, she said that she had just seen a TV ad for this, as a alternative to Viagra. If I were her, I would sue.

Ayds was a candy used as part of the Ayds diet plan-it died after the AIDS epidemic resulted in too many poor taste jokes about loosing weight with the AIDS diet plan.
