First time with col conk

I was dissapointed in the lather i got this morning from col conk bay rum. My routine is to soak face, then brush and then only one shake of brush so plenty of water on brush and face. Unfortunately i just could not get a good lather despite vigorously trying for a minute. The shave itself was decent despite lather. An interesting note is that under the puck there was a decent amount of rich lather. I need that on my brush, not under the puck. I used an old mug that perhaps was too big for the puck. Any suggestions?

Now half as wise
I generally have better luck with a very dry brush on a puck that has had some water on it for a while (length of my shower). Load the brush thoroughly, then either go to a bowl, or more often directly to the face adding water as I go.

My usual troubleshooting when have issues is to try more soap. If that doesn't work I add water. Sounds as if the brush was a little too wet to start. Although I have lathered on the puck with Col. Conk, I think it works better to load then build the lather elsewhere.

I've learned that squeezing and or shaking the brush a certain amount of times results in much different results when using different brushes. For instance if I squeeze and shake my boar, it is much too dry compared to the same squeeze and shake with my badger. I've watched many video's and seen lots of instruction, but this seems to be a continuous oversight on the well meaning instructors.

Yes, definitely. I use the same brush all the time (one from BodyShop). Some soaps/creams are one shakers such as Proraso while some are two such as Art of Shaving or Body Shop cream. I was so far off with the Conk stuff though. I'd be sitting there swirling the puck, lock at my brush and it was so disappointing.

too wet. use less water at first, and add it as you go. i love conk almond. its maybe my favorite scent.

I'm with Strop on this. Col Conk Bay Rum is one of my regularly used soaps. I load a relatively dry brush on the puck then build the lather in a bowl, adding water a little at a time until I get the lather I want. Different soaps seem to need slightly different techniques for building lather. It may take a few tries to find what works best for you on each soap but if you keep at it you'll get a great lather out of the Colonel.

Had some rather disappointing results this evening but I will definitely try some of the tips, provided here tomorrow!

Think im giving up on it. Have always face lathered, but seems like this needs to be bowl lathered. I built a fair looking lather in abowl but upon face application it was very thin still. Couldnt have whipped much longer as my arm got tired! this is supposed to be fun not a chore. Tried cella first time yesterday - now that is a soap

Col. Conk is hard for me to lather also but once its ready its gives a pretty slick shave. Same with the VDH Deluxe. Like those above, I give the brush a good squeeze and work the puck for a bit then add water as I go. The VDH Luxury takes very little water also but lathers better than the Conk or cheaper VDH soaps.

OK so gave it another shot and got some decent lather. Reasons:
1) As per advice - left some hot water on puck while I brushed teeth. This seemed to soften up the puck and also I assume that when it's right out of the package it has the least amount of "give" and it's now been used a number of times. I personally shave before shower so that the shower can take care of any nicks I might get.
2) I had been using an empty AOS container as my puck holder. Instead I used my regular lattee mug I use as a bowl and this was much better. I still am having the issue that lather is forming between puck and bowl but I simply flipped the puck over towards the end and utilized some of that rich lather that builds there. I'll definitely have to hit up Goodwill to try and find a better holder for the puck
3) Used a drier brush and added water as needed when puck lathering.
