First Shaving Bowl Purchase

For over a decade I've been using a generic coffee mug to create my lather. I recently decided to research and purchase a scuttle but the following caught my eye and I think I really like it:

Beau Brummell Marble Shaving Bowl

Any overall thoughts or suggestions? I typically soak my brush in the mug on top of my soap for a few minutes any then face lather. Using a bowl like that might cause me to change my method but I really like overall the idea of warm lather.

I won one from the Captain, he had contest, Captain is member here. Great Stuff.

Below is a link to a bowl in stock that is the best I've come across. It's resin and will never break. It builds great lather and I'm thrilled with my purchase. It's 76 with the coupon code. I highly recommend it if it's in your budget. The ridges will help make better lather.

Ten percent off code: KNBSXZGA10

This seller makes knock offs of the bowl above. One person told me the resin version is good

For twelve bucks I would take this one over the marble bowl personally due to the ridges (I own it for travel), they have a new one too but don't want to bombard with links:

Lovely bowls, both of them.... I have the large CaYuen bowl and I couldn't be happier... You can whip up lather in just a few seconds...I do have the Timeless bowl as well.... I do have two of each... different colors. `

I have the CaYuen and the Timeless bowls and the PAA Spacescape scuttle.

I am extra careful with the scuttle. I fill it, then set it on a washcloth.

Having a 70 year old sink in good condition… I am very careful with it. My concern with a marble bowl would be dropping it in my sink.

I can’t remember who sold me on the CaYuen, a few members have them. It is about as pretty as resin gets. They are quite good looking. The Timeless is functionally just as good, and much cheaper. I would not consider it particularly good looking… especially compared to the CaYuen. They are both, in my opinion, much less likely to break my sink.

The collapsible silicone bowls from Yaqi are great! They also have ridges on the bottom.
(It's not the dog feeding bowl, although they work just fine too)

The Yaqi plastic unbreakable bowls are awesome too. They have small ridges and the brush can be placed on the handle in-between passes, instead of sitting in the bowl.

Speaking as someone who has used a Timeless injection-mold for a long time and more recently got a CC copper bowl, I would say I think the Timeless is fine, but... I'm surprised how the CC seems to produce more lather? Obviously, it doesn't make obvious sense that it making more lather, but something about the CC appears to be better at extracting the lather from the brush or more efficient at whipping the lather... something.

I thought it was my imagination, but I've seen this happen with four different soaps and two different brushes now, using the same brushes and loading times. I'm not about to do a double-blind multi-controlled study, but the results are that I'm somehow getting more usable lather from the CC copper. Weird, but I'm noticing this enough to look into bowl dynamics a bit more.

Regardless of my questionable observations, I don't think anyone would reasonably disagree that the CC lather products seem to be top-notch. I can only speak about my copper bowl, but I've heard only positives about their scuttles and ceramic bowls as well.

I also think the Timeless is a very solid choice, and is rugged and efficient. I'm happy to have it, although its now my backup (much like my Henson razor).

Bicrops Ceramic Shaving Soap Bowl For Men

I ended up purchasing this one and look forward to giving it a try. It seemed like a really good combination of price, design, and function.
that has been my only bowl for three years now. I have the white one. They had a blue one that was beautiful but no longer available. Anyway, it works great and the only obvious difference is the thumb rest, which is very useful, does not have the Captains logo. Performance wise it should be identical to the CC ceramic bowl.

I have the blue Bicrops bowl. It works very well, but I haven't used it, or my others, since I got a Captain's Choice Heavyweight copper bowl. I might have to use the Bicrops soon, just for fun!

I don't have any CC lather bowls, but the design seems good at keeping the bristles from opening up and filling with lather as you swirl the brush along the walls. Or maybe I'm seeing things, too. 🙂

I think the BiCrops bowls are the same as these, the only difference being available colors.

Corgrats. A very nice bowl. I've been wet shaving for about 30 years and bought my first lather bowl last year, so you smelled the coffee long before me. Like you I was just using a coffee mug.

With regard to the Beau Brummel bowl, that was the first bowl I purchased, identical to the one in the picture you posted. It's a beautiful bowl. It's dense marble retains heat extremely well, and it whips up a fantastic lather. On the advice of some members here, I kept an eye on it when whipping up lather as the interior of the bowl is a little coarse. I only have one badger brush left that I don't use any anymore, preferring my boars and synthetics, but especially my boars. I favor my boars because of how the ends split and develop these nice little hooks that are great for lifting hairs and exfoliating. I kept a very close eye on those hooks, and sure enough, over about a month, I noticed that they started to get shorter. Fortunately I caught it before any damage was permanently done and the bristles started splitting again after a little bit of time. That bowl does duty now strictly as a soaking bowl, having been replaced by a Captain's Choice heavy copper. I may use it again eventually with synthetic knots only. I purchased a Timeless "adjustable" brush handle not long ago, so it would be fairly easy to replace an inexpensive synthetic knot if it gets worn out.

I think you've picked a great bowl. It has the same type of concentric ring pattern as a CC, and I suspect it will whip up just as great a lather. Is it marble? If it is, it should retain heat fairly well. If you have a stone vanity in your bathroom, maybe fold a face towel underneath it so that the heat isn't soaked out of the bowl too rapidly.
