First straight shave!

Yesterday was my first shave with a straight razor. After a lot of searching I finally found a guy in Sweden who can hone and yesterday my two newly honed straights came in the mail.

I did my regular prep and got cracking. I went slow and careful, so slow in fact that I had to remake my lather a few times. But after abot an hour or so I stepped out of the bathroom with a sub par shave and a grin on my face.

I had survived my first straight razor shave! A lot of stubble still left, but I had reduced 3 days growth to something that looked more like 1 days worth of stubble. Even better was that I just had one weeper and that one was from some acne that got in the way of the edge.

I am definetly sold on this! The sense of accomplishment from just surviving the first shave was just great and I can just imagine the satisfaction you can get from a DFS or the elusive BBS. :w00t:

So, basically this is me signing up for this part of the forums and for few months of crappy shaves!

Cheers

Congrats on #1. Don't worry, each shave will get better and better. Just don't get over confident after a few shaves. I found that that's what I did, and then the nicks and cuts showed up all the time. I backed off and things settled down. Now after a couple of months the shaves are really decent.

It is quite a long learning curve though, and I'm still on it, though nearing its end, I think, at least I hope. :001_smile :001_rolle :001_huh:

Congrats on the first step. You'll be surprised at how many lessons a straight will teach you. Some of the ones I learned are:
1) The bottom of my ear lobe can disappear in shaving cream. Amazingly, I can find it with a square point pretty easily.
2) Pausing with the edge of the blade on your skin to think about your angle is not a good idea. However, the little scratch will usually heal in a day or so.
3) You really must pay attention. Chatting with the wife while shaving with a straight isn't a good idea.

Thanks for the kind words. I am in for quite a ride with this I feel.

Good stuff. Head still on? Check. Not too much pain? Check. Success? Check

Still alive after 3 shaves? Check!

I will keep these things in mind, I guess that I will probably learn them the hard way one day but I can atleast try to porspone that day!

Yesterday was my 3rd shave. I have been going a bit more aggressive with the 2nd and 3rd shave since I need to look semi presentable at work.

Yesterday I recieved my coticule that I ordered from italy. After a few hours I managed to get a quite decent edge that passed HHT and didn't pull my face off.

Good work! It takes time but if you take this slowly and don't expect the best shave of the world each time, it will be awesome!!
