What's new

First antique store score.

I found two Gillette DE's at a local antique store today. Both were covered with a brown something and appeared to be identical except one was black tipped. I could see the letter "B" after a little rubbing on the under side of the head on the left side so I bought it for $3. The black tip was also $3, I may go back and get it tomorrow. After scrubbing and polishing it looks fantastic. The doors open smoothly and the gaps around the guard look the same on both sides. The letter "B" appears on underneath and to the left of the words "Reg.U.S." and the number "4" is under and to the right of the the words "Pat.Off." so I'm assuming this is a 1956 model built in the last quarter? I hope so because that is my birth year, which was what I was looking for. Is this a Tech?

Anyway, here's a couple before and after cleaning pictures. Not the best pictures but it pretty well shows the difference. This is fun.

It looks gold because of the brown layer of stuff.

i don't think its a tech because it looks like a TTO while techs are three piece razors. good score though, it looks nice!

Great score! Those should clean and polish up really nice! You stole them for $3 each! Congratulations!

And yes, a fourth quarter 1956 Flare tip Super Speed.

It's a Super Speed. And from your description, that other razor is a black tipped Super Speed.

Went back to the antique store today and got the Black Tip for $3. The date code is X2 which I belive makes it a 1952 model made in the second quarter. This one looks like it was used more than the Flare Tip, or maybe it's due to it being slightly older. Enjoy the porn.

Just about as dirty and nasty as the Flare tip.

And one of my modest arsenal. The Black Tip, the Flare Tip and the Schick injector that Leatherman PIF'd me.

I was really pleased with the way they cleaned up. I took the first pictures with a small camera, my daughter took the pics of the black tip with a much better camera that shows the crud better. I have no way of knowing but I believe both razors sat somewhere together for years because they were almost identical in how dirty they were. The black tip had an old blade in it that was actually rusty.

I'm sure a lot of the veterans have cleaned up much worse and have the technique perfected. I soaked them in scrubbing bubbles for about 2 hours, then scrubbed them with dish detergent and finished them with a lot of polishing using Simichrome metal polish.

It has been a blast shaving with these majestic old machines. I ordered a small pack of Derby blades from Amazon and will now start the search for the elusive perfect blade.
