What's new

Finally using Gillette NEW

I finally found a use for my Gillette NEW. With a Feather blade I can get an acceptable shave in 1 or 2 passes and touchups. This works great when I am on a time crunch and don't want to do a full 3 or 4 pass with touchups using my SS. I can't shave more passes than that because the NEW is just a little too aggressive for my skin. I've been wanting to find a way to use it because it is just such a beautiful razor.

I just got a Gillette New SC Big Boy as well as a English made Gillette New LC on what appears to be the razor from the French Service Set on Mr. Razor's website, although it came in a bakelite case. I've tried each one once. They are very different in a sense, one being a very hefty Big Boy and short comb while the other having a very light handle and long comb, but I got very close shaves with little irritation out of both using a Gillette 7 O'clock Super Platinum (blue) blade. I have yet to try a Feather in an open comb yet. With these News though, I can do 4 passes without much razor burn, but I do get weepers on the last pass ATG. I just started using them though.... so time will tell. You're right about them being beautiful razors though.

Aesthetically, bar handle NEWs are my favorite razors. That's the reason I keep trying them and hoping that they'll earn
a place in the steady rotation.

Agreed! I think my bar handle NEW is much prettier than the ball end NEWs. It's so simple yet so elegant.

nomoore,

I own a NEW short comb bar handle. I also found it entirely too aggressive for me to shave with.....at first. What made a difference for me was high end shaving cream (GFT) and a quality blade. It's not as forgiving of mistakes, sure. But I found when I paid very careful attention to my angle, used an Astra SP and Trumpers shave cream, I got an amazing shave with no irritation.

Don't give up on it completely yet. When you get it to work for you it will be totally worth it.

I noticed last shave it seems to shave easier and not pull as much when I have the razor angled to almost but not quite leave lather stripes, rather than with the handle closer to my face. I have some more experimenting to do. I use good quality soap (various italian soaps) and thick, creamy lather.
