What's new

Finally going to try a Gillette NEW after all this time

Picked up a short comb new for a song today. I always wanted to try one of the NEW razors, but somehow I never got around to buying one. Getting all of the green off the razor in between the teeth was hard. Gold is more intact than a lot I see which is cool. This is the more aggressive between the two NEWs, right?

Just took it for a spin. Fresh Shark Super Chrome. That is an aggressive razor with a bit of an interesting shaving angle. It did get me almost as smooth as my OCMM would, but it felt like it wanted to bite me the entire way. This may have been a blade issue. I find Shark SC to be predictable in the shave, but the comfort level varies greatly for me with sharks from razor to razor. Bar handle I am mixed on. I like the length and diameter, but the knurling is shallow and it is a bit too light. Going to keep at it with this for the week. I think I can get a cleaner shave out of it. Curious what the long is like with the different bottom plate/type of blade bend.

Big fan of oc razors that run the lather under the bottom plate as opposed to under the blade. My OCMM drives me nuts with clogging sometimes. This fits the bill for taking down extra growth.

I think you will like this razor, especially for times where you haven't shaved in three or four days. I have the long comb but don't see where the short comb would make much difference as long as the blade spacing is the same (I think it is).

It bends the blade in a completely different way I think. Isn't the bottom plate machined flat on the lc new?

I found that the Shark SS balde was best suited in the NEW. When trying a super chrome it just tore me up. A great razor and put mt on the OC track.

I just got into DE shaving, with my first razor being a Gillette NEW long comb. I am really starting to like it a lot. Been trying all kinds of blades, but the Personna Red IP has been the best so far (still have several different blades to try, Feather, Iridium, maybe even a derby). BBS in 3 passes, zero irritation. I'm finding this razor is working best for me with a very sharp razor and a very light touch. I couldn't get a close enough shave with Wilkinson swords or Astras, so I found I was trying to pressure the blade... LOTS of irritation.

Find the right blade and it should be a great razor!

Great razor - underrated classic. I use Iridium Supers and Gillette Blues in mine - i find it to be very smooth

IMHO, the short comb gives a closer shave than the long comb. And my favorite blade, by far, is a feather. Sharks = Dorcos in my experience.

In any case, congrats on picking up a fine razor.

When I first tried mine, I thought the same. I set it aside for a while and came back to it when I had more experience. Now it doesn't seem harsh at all, and I love it. You need to learn how to use it with a nice light touch. I use mine with Astra SPs.

The bar handle is hollow. I added some lead shot to mine and it helped a lot. It goes in through the top of the handle when the head has been removed. I asked a friend who shoots skeet, and he gave me a small pill bottle full of lead shot. I poured it in carefully and sealed it with a small wad of paper towel. Pretty easy to do, especially if you can find a small funnel.

Good luck!

I think the blade didn't agree with it. I usually shave with an ocmm, or an opened up adjustable yet rarely get bit. This didn't bite, but the blade was not comfortable.

Only other blades I had were feathers and I hate testing an unfamiliar razor with a blade unforgiving of goofs.

If you're in the U.S., I would gladly send you a few blades out of my newly assembled sampler to try in that NEW. Besides Feathers (which you've already got) I've got Astras, Personnas, german Wilks, Polsilver Iridiums, Gillette yellows, Derbys. PM me if you're interested.

No, it's ok. Thank you though. I love a short way from pasteur in NYC. I've just been busy and haven't had a chance to replenish stocks of stuff.

I wouldn't go that far! Thing about shark sc is if you have 10 of them, maybe 3 will be a bit crap, 3 will be smooth and great and the rest average. I like feathers too, they are just horrible for testing unfamiliar equipment or soap/cream bc they are unforgiving to less than ideal conditions.

Congrats on the NEW razor. I have a bar handle SC and LC, and I prefer my LC (probably just because it's shinier). Both are excellent razors IMHO. I'd say the SC is slightly more aggressive, but that is just my opinion. YMMV. Enjoy the razor!
