Few questions

Just wanted to know a few answers about straight razor shaving. Will i need
oil the blade everytime? I'm worried about the rust that I've read about in the tutorials.

I had so many questions to ask but can't seem to think of any as of now.

I don't use oil, I have ~15 razors in my rotation at the moment and they don't rust. You need to make sure they are dry when you finish your shave. The most important bit is the edge, if the edge rust, that's where it goes down hill!

I don't think it's always necessary to oil the razor, but it is necessary to keep it DRY. Wipe it dry after each shave and you shouldn't need to oil it.

Navalha,

Go to the top of the page on the General Straight Shaving Discussion page. Look at the Str8 shaving tutorial link. It will take care of a lot of your questions. Also, look up Chimensch's straight shaving video (stickied at the top of the page) as a good example of a str8 shave in action.

Best of luck and post lots of questions! Welcome to str8s!

Ah hell...just check here

i dont, but I dont live in a very humid place, and my razors are stored outside the steamy bathroom

I did at first living in a very humid area. I found they didnt rust as long as they were dry, so I only oil with ballistol when I store them.

I oil with mineral oil daily, takes maybe 10-15 seconds. Gives me piece of mind and I don't need to be sure to use that particular razor immediately. Haven't had any issues either!

If I am going to be using the razor again within a week or two, I do not oil them. If they are going into the closet for a while, I do.

+++++ make sure they are truly dry when you are done shaving. That also means you should not to put them down on a damp towel or the damp counter top- writing from experience with doing this

I did for a while but it seemed a bit pointless after a while since I only had two and now only one razor. As so many have said just dry it with a towel and then I usually do about ten laps on the strop to dry the edge and then I just let it sit on the ledge above the sink until next time. I have never had any problems.

If applying the oil do I do it to the whole blade, or just the part that cuts my hair?

I've never used a straight before. I've been shaving with gillette disposible for 4 years then switched to electric rotaries for 3. I went to replace the rotary cutters and head and found out it would cost $79.

If you're using it...cover the whole blade. One method I've heard used is to take a bit of oil, put it on a tissue and "strop" the tissue. But truthfully, I think oil unecessary in all but the most humid climes. I bought some and have used it rarely since.
