Fatip Piccolo (Mk 2) - How would you RATE its AGGRESSIVENESS?

Chan Eil Whiskers

Fumbling about.

Let me take the survey. My razor is the Blackland Blackbird.

Comments added within the survey.

Question added...

How many times have you shaved with this razor?

Answer: Once, this morning.

>>>>> EXPERIENCE <<<<<

50. Measurements That I Have Made (masses, lengths, blade gap, etc.):

The handle measured (if I remember it right) about 11mm. Definitely over 10mm. Diameter.

51. Comments:

I've used the razor only once. I like it so far. It's from the BST. The handle is a good one for this razor but I don't think any other handle will work for the razor due to the unique fit between the stock handle and the baseplate. Also, I think no other handle will tighten the head on this razor like the Blackland handle.

Fortunately, this is an extremely good handle.

The razor may be a tad top heavy in somebody's view of it.

It is a very heavy razor. It feels heavier than its weight (vendor's weight is 98 grams). It also looks extremely heavy.

The blade is not rigid, but the shave is much better than I would have perhaps expected.

>>>>>>>>>>>>

Hope that helps some, Grant. I did this rapidly (like anybody would) except for the comments I added.

Looking better and better, Grant.

I think it's about ready for broader feedback. I agree with Mike about getting a good bit of feedback before making any changes. It may still require changing more than once more, but I'd bet the changes will be small (making it easier for people to understand, assuming that is any problem at all which it might not be)

It looks very good to me.

Thanks, Jim. Soon, I'm going to make this into a Google survey for the beta testing and feedback.

How many times have you shaved with this razor?

I could review the razor I shaved with the first time this morning, and someone would and will, but I'd like to know what the reviewer's experience with the razor actually is.

Great point, Jim. "Approximate or exact amount of time that I have used the razor" would fit the phrasing with other metrics. I suppose that the user should be able to enter the number of years, months, weeks, days.

Jim did it so I dont have too. :tongue_sm

:thumbup1:

I think its good Grant.

>>>>> OPERATION AND EFFECTS <<<<<

I like how you added in the bits for effectiveness and others across the range of angles.

I think so, too, Mike. It's really getting there.

Here's another metric that I'm going to add. I got this idea from a thread about how some blades were not fitting so well in a razor:

Fit of Blades (single number on a scale from 0 for no blades fit to 10 for all suitable blades fit):

"Precision and Fit of Pieces" will be renamed to "Precision and Fit of Pieces, Not Including Blades", I think. Then, "Fit of Blades" will fall in right after that.

Great point, Jim. "Approximate or exact amount of time that I have used the razor" would fit the phrasing with other metrics. I suppose that the user should be able to enter the number of years, months, weeks, days.
I must admit that I've just been skimming, Grant. Do you ask elsewhere how often the "form filler inner" shaves? Obviously there would be a difference in experience between a 12 hourly shaver and a once a week shaver.

Esox

I didnt know

Let me take the survey. My razor is the Blackland Blackbird.

Comments added within the survey.

Great feedback! Thanks, Jim! :thumbup: I'm going through your entries and making comments as I go...

* Double-Edge (DE): 9 (what's an expert?)

That's subjective and up to the user. :001_smile With all of the data that we'll collect, we'll be able to correlate expertise ratings with time and numbers of razors and blades. That will be interesting!

* Single-Edge (SE): 2 (GEM and E-R, or those + AC + injectors? needs to be clear.)

You're right, Jim! I struggled with this. I don't even know what "E-R" is. :001_unsur

What are all of the SE (not shavette) razors?...

* Artist Club (AC)
* Gem
* E-R [what is this?]
* Injector

2. Exact or approximate amount of time that I have shaved in the following areas:
(time measured how? number of shaves? years?)

I'm thinking that in the Google survey, the user would be able to enter in the numbers of years and months and weeks and days. So, a user could just enter 1 year or 1 day or 2 years and 3 months or whatever. Time is an easier frame of reference and the one that most people use, I think, than number of shaves. The good thing is that if you've done five shaves with the razor, you could just enter 5 days, so it all works, I think.

5. My Perceived Hair Toughness (single number on a scale from 0 for extremely weak to 10 for extremely tough):
10 (that's not everywhere, but it is my toughest beard hair. shouldn't this be whiskers or are we doing beard and head?)

7. My Perceived Hair Direction Complexity (single number on a scale from 0 for extremely simple to 10 for extremely complex): 10 (again, that's my worst areas. my face is easy).

You've brought up great points, Jim. There are face shavers and head shavers, etc., and someone could use the same razor on different parts of the body with different hair and skin properties. Even as only a face shaver or head shaver, one encounters easier and tougher hair to cut.

I now think that when the user selects the razor and blade combination for review, he/she should also check boxes for the areas of the body that go with the review and give "overall" hair and skin properties that go with the review.

18. Weight (single number on a scale from 0 for least satisfied to 10 for most satisfied): 10 (with this razor only)

Jim, what made you add the comment about weight being with the razor only? You rated weight as 10 meaning that you were most satisfied with the weight of the razor, that you didn't want it lighter or heavier. Should I be more descriptive in the metric?

27. Value (single number on a scale from 0 for awful or a total rip-off to 10 for phenomenal for its price with 5 for appropriate for its price): 4 or 5, but only because the razor is quite expensive. that will color this one.

I'm probably going to make radio button choices in whole numbers from 0 to 10 for easy selection, but with an "Other" radio button with a text box for typing in a number. So, in rating the value, you'd be able to touch on 4 or 5, or maybe you'd pick "Other" and type in 4.5. Your response might look like this:

( ) 10 = Phenomenal for Its Price
( ) 9
( ) 8
( ) 7
( ) 6
( ) 5 = Appropriate for Its Price
( ) 4
( ) 3
( ) 2
( ) 1
( ) 0 = Awful or a Total Rip-Off
(*) Other: 4.5

30. Balance (single number on a scale from 0 for least satisfied to 10 for most satisfied): 7

The razor may be a tad top heavy in somebody's view of it.

How about this?...

30. Balance (single number on a scale from 0 for awful balance for me to 10 perfectly balanced for me):

31. Direction of Imbalance (If Applicable):

( ) Top heavy (towards top of cap)
( ) Bottom heavy (towards bottom of handle)

40. Time to Learn without Advice (if applicable; single number on a scale from 0 for seemingly no time to 10 for extreme amount of time): 2 (but doesn't this depend on experience of the shaver?)

Do you think that the user should quantify time to learn in weeks + days?

43. Aggressiveness (single number on a scale from 0 for extremely mild to 10 for extremely aggressive):
* Shallow-Angle Shaving ("Riding the Cap"): N/A
* Neutral-Angle Shaving: 3 or 4
* Steep-Angle Shaving ("Riding the Guard"): 3 or 4
(if you want only exact numbers forget it unless the user is forced to give one whole number)

As with the "value" example above, I think that we'll make selection easy with radio buttons from 0 to 10, but allow the user to select "Other" and type in a number.

The handle is a good one for this razor but I don't think any other handle will work for the razor due to the unique fit between the stock handle and the baseplate. Also, I think no other handle will tighten the head on this razor like the Blackland handle.

I thought about this issue before, but I never added anything for it. How about this new metric?...

Compatibility of Head with Non-Stock Handles (single number on a scale from 0 for only compatible with stock handle(s) to 10 for apparently compatible with all standard handles):

It is a very heavy razor. It feels heavier than its weight (vendor's weight is 98 grams). It also looks extremely heavy.

I might take a stab soon at adding the section for basic razor data. Mass (in grams) would be in there. There might be an issue between official mass from the vender and personal measurements.

The blade is not rigid, but the shave is much better than I would have perhaps expected.

You know, we don't have metrics for what kind of shaves the user is getting the razor. We should probably add something to the end of the "Operation and Effects" section. How about this?...

Shave Satisfaction (single number on a scale from 0 for least satisfied to 10 for most satisfied):

Hope that helps some, Grant. I did this rapidly (like anybody would) except for the comments I added.

That was really helpful, Jim! Thanks! I'm glad that you went through this quickly because that's the way we want it to be and how we would expect it to go. We want everything to be clear so that the user doesn't have to sit there and be confused and waste time wondering what we're even asking for. This keeps getting better and better. :001_smile

I must admit that I've just been skimming, Grant.

Hey, at least you're checking in here. Thanks, buddy. I wouldn't blame anyone for skipping this thread. It's basically a work room for spitballing ideas and refining the survey. I'll be starting a new thread in the near future for beta testing and feedback.

Do you ask elsewhere how often the "form filler inner" shaves? Obviously there would be a difference in experience between a 12 hourly shaver and a once a week shaver.

Ah! Good point, Cal! Thanks! No, I don't ask that question and I should. I'm against asking for the number of shaves because the math would bother people or be unreasonable, so time is being used, but I'm not asking for the shaving rate, the number of shaves per unit time that can be multiplied by the time to get the number of shaves. How about this?...

2. Overall rate and approximate or exact total amount of time that I have shaved in the following areas:
* Double-Edge (DE): [#] shave(s) per [day, week, month, or year] for a total of [#] year(s) and [#] month(s) and [#] week(s) and [#] day(s)
* . . .

The user would type in the number of shaves, pick the unit of time from a drop-down menu, and then type in the time numbers. I would be able to then calculate approximate/exact numbers of shaves.

Chan Eil Whiskers

Fumbling about.

I don't know what I was thinking here, Grant.

40. Time to Learn without Advice (if applicable; single number on a scale from 0 for seemingly no time to 10 for extreme amount of time): 2 (but doesn't this depend on experience of the shaver?)
Do you think that the user should quantify time to learn in weeks + days?

Mostly I think this is going to vary a lot from person to person. A guy who can shave with any safety razor might require no advice and be able to adjust on the fly by "just shaving" even with a very challenging razor. Another fellow new to the type of razor might need a lot of help learning the same razor due to their inexperience. That's all I meant.

It's not just razor dependent, but also user dependent.

Grant, I like your suggested tweaks. I think as a few people use the survey (beta testers) it will become obvious what needs to be modified.

"You know, we don't have metrics for what kind of shaves the user is getting the razor. We should probably add something to the end of the "Operation and Effects" section. How about this?...

Shave Satisfaction (single number on a scale from 0 for least satisfied to 10 for most satisfied):"

We could also ask about the shave in more detail. After all, this really is more about the shave than about the razor, right.

How close was the shave?
How comfortable was the shave?
How smooth was the shave? BBS? DFS? Etc.
How long did the shave last?

I know some of this is redundant but I think redundancy improves a survey.

I think Cal is right. A guy who shaves once a week is a different cat from a guy who has to shave daily. It's a simple question. I like simple questions.

I agree. The format of

[#] shave(s) per [day, week, month, or year] for a total of [#] year(s) and [#] month(s) and [#] week(s) and [#] day(s)

covers all rates and times. It looks too complicated, though. I combined the rate and time metrics because it makes sense to give both at the same time, but now, it looks too long. It might look okay in a Google form. If not, I'll split it up and into two metrics for the time and rate.

Yeah, I hear you, Jim. Should the "time to learn" metric be cut? I'm learning towards keeping it.

I agree. Actually, I was thinking about that when I replied, but I just kept the "shave satisfaction" metric. What about these metrics?...

Closeness of Shave (single number on a scale from 0 for stubble everywhere to 10 for baby butt smooth (BBS)):

Comfort of Shave (single number on a scale from 0 for extremely uncomfortable to 10 for extremely comfortable):

Satisfaction with Shave (single number on a scale from 0 for least satisfied to 10 for most satisfied):

I don't think that we should ask how long the shave lasts, but we could ask about how fast the user's hair grows...

My Perceived Hair Growth Rate/Speed (single number on a scale from 0 for slowest to 10 for fastest):

Good?

Very good!

Great! I'll post an updated version of the survey. There's a long list of changes! It seems like we got through a bunch of changes from Mike making his way through the survey, and now we're getting through even more changes from you going through the survey after having not done so in awhile, so I expect that the next person that goes through it will come up with something new! :laugh: Hey, that's what feedback is for. Real testing is needed. We keep working out the kinks. The goal in refining this thing is to have users get through the survey without feeling like the survey doesn't cover something or covers something incorrectly or confusingly. If users go through it and feel like it's solid, then we've done it. :001_smile

Nice!

Below is the latest version of the proposed safety razor survey. There are a lot of additions this time around! Big thanks belong to Jim in this round, and thanks also go to Cal and Mike, too. The following changes were made:
  • Changed "Experience" to "General Shaving Experience"
  • Improved list of SE razors
  • Added rate of shaving per shaving area. Rate multiplied by time will yield approximate/exact numbers of shaves.
  • Added metric for user to select which areas of the user's body apply to the survey
  • Added "overall" to hair and skin properties since properties vary, even in the same area
  • Added "hair growth rate/speed" metric
  • Moved hair and skin section after razor and blade section, since the body area shaved can depend on the razor choice
  • Added metric for usage of the specific razor
  • Renamed "Handle" to "Handle Overview and Construction"
  • Renamed "Safety Razor Preliminaries" to "Safety Razor Overview and Construction"
  • Rewrote "balance" metric and added "direction of imbalance" metric
  • Added "Compatibility of Head with Non-Stock Handles"
  • Renamed "Precision and Fit of Pieces" to "Precision and Fit of Pieces, Not Including Blades"
  • Added "Fit of Blades" since sometimes blades fit without a problem and other times blades get stuck or don't fit right
  • Moved "Fun and Coolness" metric after "Value" metric in handle and safety razor preliminaries sections
  • Moved surface and plating condition metrics below material metrics
  • Renamed "Time to Learn without Advice" to the simpler "Ease of Learning" and adjusted the scale accordingly
  • Added "Results" section with closeness, comfort, and satisfaction metrics
These are known issues that still remain unresolved:
  • Collecting basic information that is independent of user opinion, such as manufacturing location, price, materials, construction, etc. I might try adding this next time.
  • DE and SE safety razors work with the survey. It appears that non-cartridge multi-blade razors, e.g., the Leaf, will also work with the survey, as long as the user is okay using the adjustment settings text box to describe the setup. Cartridges could theoretically be included, but there are no blades to choose with the razor. Straights and shavettes could theoretically work if the survey is modified, but the modifications might be too extensive.
Thoughts?

Thanks, guys! :001_smile

Here are some changes that I thought of after posting the latest version:

* Allow user to describe the shave: WTG, XTG, ATG for pass 1, 2, 3, etc. A text entry would be simplest, but more fields might be best.

* Incorporate adjustable/baseplate setting into the razor selection, e.g., Rockwell 6S with Size R1 Baseplate and Merkur Futur on Setting 4. This would help with making sure that input is legitimate and it would make processing easier.

* Allow notes for condition of razor, e.g., polished modification, came used with scratches, model year and quarter, etc.

What do you think?
