Fancy Dancy Scuttle Question and Recommendation

I have a few mugs and a bowl that I have been using for lathering. I really want to check out a scuttle though. However, why do most scuttles look like they were made in beginners pottery class! Seriously. Does a scuttle have to be all pottery clay looking for it to work well?

I know this is a personal opinion and taste, and I totally understand and do not actually judge anyone who likes their scuttle.

Can someone recommend a good scuttle for me to check out that doesn't look like a pottery reject. Something I can order and ship in the US. All or mostly black would fit with what I already have going. I've done a quick search for scuttles here, but nothing really has caught my eye yet.

Thanks!

Just a S.W.A.G., but I would suspect the thicker pottery holds heat better. Plus for low volume items like scuttles, it's easier than making a ceramic mold.

Look in the bowl latherer and scuttle lover thread. If you don't see anything you like, i'm afraid you will not find anything better.

How about this? If it's to beginer pottery for you, i'm afraid a scuttle is not for you.

So far that is the best looking scuttle I've seen by far. Definitely not beginner pottery. The white one is very nice, the rest of the color options I really do not care for. If this came in all black, they would have no problem taking my money. I think I'll write them and see what they say about more color options.

Thanks.

If anyone else has suggestions, please throw them my way too.

Doesn't sound like a scuttle would be for you.

It's ok, not everyone uses one. I don't.

As far as I know, all of the scuttles I've seen have been hand made. I've never seen one that wasn't hand made pottery.

Edit: is there a link or picture in rockminers post? I didn't see one, but I'd be interested to see what he turned up.

Edited my post because i didn't know if that link worked. I like the white one as well. I'm just guessing but i would think they could do black.

Goonies never say die!
They seem like a neat way to keep your lather nice and warm. I will find my scuttle!

Wow! That does look nice!

Also, you may want to check mamabears site in mid December when she gets more, the pictured ones look quite nice to me.

I just don't have the space for a scuttle in the bathroom, I share a small living space (and even smaller bathroom) with three other people and four cats. Lol. I did try the double bowl improvised scuttle method for a few months, but for me personally it brought no extra joy or comfort to my shaves.

If you go to georgetownpottery.com they have a black and copper color called hamada. It's mostly black. ( G20 in the "shaving" section )

Found this on amazon

there are lots of good looking scuttles, some perform as good as they look, others do not.

the 2 I have in my den right now are a DB1.5 with webbed pattern (looks and performance are top notch) and a SRD scuttle I use as a brush scuttle (also looks and performs great).

neither look like they were made in a high school pottery class if you ask me.

Just in case fellas,

This is not a scuttle you build lather in. The soap sits on the top, while the warm water keeps the soap warm. You stick your brush in the side to keep it warm as well. The other scuttles posted on here actually allowed you to build lather in the bowl.

Thanks! That's good to know. I'm more interested in one I can build lather in and keep the lather warm.

Julie is fantastic to deal with, does glazes not shown on her site and will customize it (engraving, handles size, width, depth etc).

My ghetto scuttle consists of a metal dog bowl that fits inside a large (4"ish) latte mug. You can rig something together pretty easily at the thrift store to see if you enjoy using one and if you do then commit to spending some big bucks on something nice.
