Some New Scuttles

My aunt is a potter, and we‘ve put our heads together on a scuttle project. After three generations of scuttles, I feel like we’ve got some great performance.

After watching the now-classic Chimensch video from back in the day, I went looking for the big scuttle to find the company no longer makes them. I have what I need now, and figured I’d ask around to see if anyone else has ever looked for a bigger option.

Gen 1 - The most compact and closest to common options available on Etsy. Felt a bit cramped to me when swirling lather, and I couldn’t dip my brush.

Gen 2 - Added a bigger spout for dipping and ridges to help build lather. A bit short, so doesn’t hold as much water in the double-walled section. I think it’s the most elegant, a nice low-profile design that performs well, looks sleek.

Gen 3 - Deeper, wider bowl builds a ton of lather easily and holds it very well. Greater water capacity in the double walls, bigger spout, breather hole in the back. I love/hate the breather hole because it makes pouring easier, but water can come out the back as well. Tip the scuttle to dip your brush.

Nice looking scuttles; just a few weeks back I started using a scuttle again and that feeling of warm lather hitting the facial skin is pure bliss. (I doubt any cold shavers will be able to understand what I am talking about.)

I use a sink full of warm water for dipping my brush, so I have no need for a large spout.
Also, I am not so sure about that breather hole. I have no problem pouring the water out after the shave and, as you already mentioned, a breather hole may spill water when you don’t really want it. My technique is to fill the scuttle with hot water, tilt the scuttle spout up when moving it, and then place it next to the sink. So you can see why a breather hole would not work for me.

IMO, the bottom of a scuttle is all important, with the right ridges and grooves it helps create a perfect lather.

Since I have started using a scuttle again, I also noticed that I reach more often for shaving creams or softer soaps.

My dad’s wife made me a couple, and I still have them. They got maybe a year’s work before I went to face lathering.

These days I don’t have to put up with many cold days and use boars primarily. I have a brush scuttle that’ll do the trick with my badgers when called upon a dreary day.

Nice work on them though.

I'm thinking you could probably make a small check-valve for the breather hole pretty easily. Small tube, ball bearing, spring, o-ring. press on ball to pour. Let go and it sits into the o-ring to stop water from swishing out. Make the hole in the scuttle bigger, and put a grommet in it to secure the valve.
Ok, I'll stop thinking too much now..
