Expenses for wetshaving

15 months ago I began wetshaving.

I started in order to save money and to get better shaves.

For the fun of it I have kept a spreadsheet of purchases since the beginning. This show I have spent 1083 Danish kroner. Dividing this by 15 months and converting to USD with todays exchange rate shows an expense of about 12.19 USD/month.

Given that I have not kept track of expenses used to ship items to the states as PIFS the real expense is probably somewhere closer to 12.5 - 12.9 USD/month.

How much do you spend on average?

Holy ****, how do you manage that???

Oh I see, you haven't taken the plunge on straights......yet :)

I haven't kept a log of what I have spent, but if I take what I currently stock of shaving gear I'd estimate is somewhere about $6000 and it's almost exactly 24 months since I first started, so an average a month of $250 :)

At least $50/month when I first got started (6+ months). I've calmed down quite a bit because I have no place for all my shave gear. Lately my money is primarily going to postage (trades, PIFs).

Probably I broke even compared to Gillette M3 the first year, when it was just a Futur, blades and shaving cream. Year two had been a miserable setback, economically since I started picking up some more creams, some more razors and some more blades.

I've spent about $20.00 US so far this year. That's for about a 4 year supply of blades. I have enough soap to last for years without buying more.

Minimalism has its rewards.

I once spent two years without making a purchase, but overall it would probably be cheaper to have a barber flown in every time I wanted to shave.

This year, I have spent about 400 Euros on shaving...

But there were 3 brushes involved, and a bulk order for blades plus 10 sticks of IM.

And those are really my expenses for this year AND it has been an extreme year, really, AND I'm running out of excuses...

The Lather Maestro
I spent a bunch trying new stuff, getting old razors and such when I started, then pif'd or sold most old stuff and settled down to one razor/handle for about 10 months. Now I just got one more razor for fun. I've narrowed my soap prefs down quite a bit now and am slowing down on experimenting pretty much.

Given my soap preferences are pretty fairly economical (RazoRock, Cella mostly) and I only use Gillette Blacks now, if I bought a year's supply of stuff all at once to consolidate shipping charges, I'd guess that $90-100 per year would be plenty and I'd likely have a month or two of lather product left. At the higher figure of $100 that's $8.33 USD per month ongoing expense.

Sunk costs on what I still own, two razors at about $60 each = $120. Scuttle at $35. about 5 brushes totalling about $160 all in, that's $315 and more than was necessary.

Without a scuttle (optional) and getting a decent razor and brush like an Edwin Jagger and a Parker Best Badge in faux tortoise you could get your gear for $60 or less and shave for $8.33 per month or less.

But who does that? Nobody, it's purely a theoretical exercise!

Probably $150 a month for the reasonable past. Sunk costs are interesting. If I don't count them, then I just appear pathetic - not certifiable.

However, I don't need anything else so I won't be buying anything for the rest of the year... ( My year runs from July 1st to June 30)

I've definitely spent more than my fair share on shaving supplies. But one of the beauties of this "hobby"/obsession is that most of these products retain their value and are easily sold via the BST. I've found that I can buy a razor, try it out for a bit, shave ~$5-$10 off my purchase price, and sell it to someone else that wants to try it out. I'm not sure if this is rather prohibitive for you being in Denmark or not.

I'm evoking Executive Privilege here as this is a matter of Marital Security...in the wrong hands this information could result in me sleeping on the couch for the foreseeable future. :001_smile

Were I to keep records SWMBO would be able to use those against me :scared:

I imagine the the mean for me would be less than $10/month; I go for a while without buying, the splurge.
