Ever Ready March 24/14 - handle question

Gents, I am in receipt of an excellent shaving device: link

I know next to nothing about metal and metal cleaning. The head is nickel-plated, I suspect, and is in very good condition. The handle, however, is of a different material.

Can anyone tell me of what type metal the handle is made? It has some staining and I don't know how to clean it up. Any suggestions? Many thanks.

i THINK the base metal is brass.

Thanks, Dave. The metal sticks to magnet, so I believe it wouldn't be true brass.

I re-threaded the the razor head and use a different handle now. Not a fan of that one.

A soak in scrubbing bubbles or LIQUID Comet bathroom cleanser.
Then work on it with MAAS or Blue Magic polish and a soft toothbrush.
A toothpick is handy for getting into the grooves of the knurling.

I have the exact razor and it is a great shaver!! The handle is sort of a weird cheap feeling metal. Mine has some corrosion on the bottom knob as well and is just kind of black under the missing plating. Dunno what it is!! I agree though that it is not likely brass as it grabs a magnet like crazy.

I soaked the snot out of my handle in Scrubbing Bubbles though and it didn't hurt a thing. Scrubbed it off with a toothbrush and it is as good as it is going to get.

I personally like the handle for shaving as it encourages a light and gentle use of the razor. The head is great as it is halfway between a lather catcher and a 1912. These were patented in March of 1914 and marketed later that year along with their new Ever Ready blades - the Radio blades. Really, this razor is one of my favorites. But, the handle coating does leave something to be desired!

Thanks for the advice, gentlemen. I've tried a number of cleaning methods, and it is looking better than when received. I'll pick up some MAAS or similar when I'm next at the hardware store.

I agree with RocketMan that the handle encourages good technique. Also, the comb seems to have a little flex to it, which is notably different from my G Bar. Shaving with this Ever Ready is an absolute pleasure!
