Entertaining Books

I'm going to be using my cycling trainer a lot this winter (basically the treadmill equivalent for bicyles). I've always hated treadmills and the like, I get terribly bored on them, but sometimes the weather doesn't permit being outside especially on two wheels, so I need good entertaining audiobooks to listen to, or I'll end up just hopping off and surfing B&B instead.

I've read all of the Cussler novels, all of Jonathan and Faye Kellerman's Books and all of Robert B. Parkers as well as some other authors, I'm mentioning these so you guys have some idea what I'm looking for. I need good easy to follow entertaining books with enough intrigue to keep me distracted and it has to have some kind of mystery element or I will get bored very quickly.

Thanks so much and I look forward to all your recommendations!

Might be a bit gritty for your tastes, but Andrew Vachss' "Burke" novels are awesome fare.

They don't have to be read in order, necessarily, but I believe the first one is either Strega or Hard Candy.

I've read all his novels, but my very favorite one actually isn't in the Burke series . . . it's called Shella and it's just chillingly brilliant.

Presumably you've been through the Laurence Saunders (First Deadly Sin, etc.) and Robert Ludlum (Materese Circle, etc.) catalogs but if not, they are both worth checking out if you like an exciting ride. Caleb Carr has a couple of dark, grisly novels set in 19th Century NYC that are definitely worth reading (The Alienist and Angel of Darkness).

Of the more current bestseller-type authors, David Baldacci's stuff would probably fit the bill. I particularly liked Hour Game, and The Camel Club and its sequels are tons of fun.

If you want something a little more challenging, I can't recommend any author more highly than Umberto Eco. The Name of the Rose is my personal favorite, but Foucault's Pendulum and The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loanna are also excellent.

Enjoy!

There are many good authors to read

Ridley Pearson
Michael Connolly
James Patterson
Jeffrey Deaver

John Krakauer's Into Thin Air and Into the Wild are great. Into the wild is a great BOT - get the one with Campbell Scott narrating.

Want an adventure series that is really different? I highly recommend Wilbur Smith's series about South Africa. It's sort of like the American Wild West, but in South Africa. He has a great 4 book series that takes place in both modern and ancient Egypt, - The Seventh Scroll, River God, Warlock, and The Quest.

"Dies the Fire" by S.M. Stirling.

I believe you may have read some of Preston and Child. I am currently reading Ice Limit, and have read a few of the Pendergrast ones. These guys are good at story telling.

Raymond Chandler and Walter Mosley go well with boring workouts, and the books fit nicely in one hand in case you need to hold on to the treadmill with the other. For Mosley the Easy Rawlins detective stories are top notch.

Also +1 to Umberto Eco, good stuff!

I really love the books of James Lee Burke. He has a unique style, most all are crime novels. He's a Mizzou alum to boot!
