DR Harris Arlington - Shave Stick or Puck

I know that there are a lot of threads about Arlington, and therefore I've become very curious. (I mostly blame those evil enablers in the 3017, they really know how to make people want to spend their money!:scared:)

I have a trip to South Africa coming up in December for three weeks, and I thought that I could use that time to get to know the soap during my trip. I'm trying to decide between the shave stick or the puck. I'm leaning toward the shave stick as it will be convenient for the trip and will let me get to know the soap before splashing out for the puck.

If you were in this situation, which would you buy?

Great question! I'm sure many will say "puck only, it's cheaper per gram", which is true... BUT...

I absolutely LOVE the DRH Stick format. I have and thoroughly enjoy my Arlington stick. The holder is second to none and the soap loads great on the face without soaking, etc.

I'll also add that a stick format is fantastic for unknown water conditions, as this loading method really takes the guesswork out of using enough product.

IMHO - the experience that comes with the stick is simply worth it.

Fridays are Fishtastic!
Normally with Harris I would say bowl. But as you are travelling, take a stick and face lather.

Why am I not OK with a stick of Arlington? I feel as though this soap deserves a proper bowl. I feel it cheapens the soap to put it in a push-up pop container. It makes all the sense in the world to travel with a soap stick. Arko, Palmolive, Speick perhaps. But Arlington? Arlington? It sits in its Old Spice mug on the towel waiting for my return home.

I have a puck of Arlington, but have a stick of Marlborough on its way. I love them both, and will use Marlborough on a regular basis, but also want something to travel with. For travel purposes, get a stick. Heck, buy a puck too when you get home.

For a trip, maybe the stick would be better but I prefer puck. I didn't like my one Harris stick and took a Spyderco knife and whittled it into a bowl. The other 4 Harris soaps I bought in bowls or as refill pucks.

It's really not difficult at all to travel with a puck in a practical kind of container, such as any compact plastic container with a snap or screw-on lid, unless the bathroom facilities arrangement or other circumstances pressure you to save time by using a stick.

I understand!

However, I am spending a month with my wife's family so I want them to say to themselves "this guy is right for our girl, because he travels with Arlington!"

Usually I would take stick forms when travelling, but since you're away for a whole month, take a puck. Never tried Arlington stick, only the puck, as Valobra, Speick and La Toja are my preferred travelling companions.

Ah ha! Beautiful! Display it prominently with the appropriate brush and razor!

A quick scan of the thread tells me that no-one has yet given you the correct advice. Buy both, of course! This should allow you to save on shipping costs.

Take the Arlington stick with you and then you will have a brand new puck of soap waiting for you upon your return.

It really is that good.

What I (or anyone else) would buy doesn't matter. I travel with the same stuff that I use at home which means that I'd buy a puck. You need to purchase based on your preferences. If you don't know what you prefer then pick whatever sounds like it would suit you best. Then try the other option the next time around.

Polling random people with differing preferences is never the way to determine your own preference no matter what the topic.

Another subjective/YMMV matter. I have no problems loading from a puck no matter what water, brush or soap I'm using. No guesswork is needed if you know what to look, feel and listen for (refer to the lathering guide linked in the sticky at the top of the soap subforum). Again, go with what works for you.

+1. Why didn't I think of that?

It's advice like that that will get my wife suspicious! Love it!

I understand what you are saying, and really do appreciate your input! The purpose of my question was to see if people suggested using a shave stick whilst traveling instead of taking a puck, logistically. Like you, I want to travel with what I'm using at home (which, in this case is going to be Arlington) but the form of the soap was the question. Thank you for reminding me that YMMV is definitely the rule!

Neither yet... I went to Pasteur's today but got there just after they closed! :scared: Nevertheless, I have the honor of waiting a few more days before making a decision.
