Dr. Grabow or: How I (Wished I) Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Pipe

Out on the back deck, listening to the ballgame, pipe loaded with some Peterson's Perfect Plug, just about to light up but then the neighbour's back window swings open. Moment ruined. Set pipe down and get the laptop out to type this up. When I moved in to the neighbourhood last summer, I quickly discovered that this particular neighbour doesn't like the smell of tobacco smoke. Whenever I'd have a cigarette in the backyard, their window would immediately close. A couple times it closed with audible force, perhaps to send me a message? Hey, I get it, I agree, cigarette smoke is poison and were I not a smoker I certainly wouldn't want it wafting into my house. I thought maybe pipe smoke would be an improvement but no such luck (unfortunately aromatics are not an option for me), windows close all the same.

It's kind of an uppity area. You know the kind: young professionals, tofu eaters, lawn watchers, etc. To give you some idea of how close together the houses are in this neighbourhood, I can tell you with some certainty what my neighbours watch on tv on what days of the week and also who might be coming down with a cold... AAAACHEW! I don't have a relationship with these people but I'd prefer not feeling like a hypocrite when I smile and say hi to them when our paths cross outside, which is to say, telling them to *** off if they don't like my smoke is not an option. I've beeen smoking in the garage over the winter but now that the weather is more conducive to outside piping I'd really like to take advantage of it. I'm not asking for your opinions to act on them, as I have resigned myself to smoking in the garage when the windows are open. I'm just curious to hear how you feel about the issue in general and how you might (or already do) handle similar situations. Here's what I'm missing at the moment:

Okay, it's not a Grabow but unfortunately they're not called Dr. Medicos.

Fridays are Fishtastic!
As to the neighbors, I don't know. I am lucky in that regard. I would probably just do it. Hell, my neighbors have cooked things that smelled offensive to me- I just got over it.

Love the thread title as well. Fire up the BBQ and/or leaf blower when you smoke?

we don't have neighbors up here :wink2:

and really I think he could live with a closed window for a few minutes here and there Jason, its not like your out there all day long doing it, and its your backyard

Id stop worrying about it and just enjoy your smoke

i've had to deal wit it in the winter when at the GFs apartment. slamming patio doors they had open on warm winter days. seeing as i don't complain to them about their dog barking all day (one one side) or them listening to music too loud at night (on the other) then they have no grounds to say anything.

outside on your property is free game anyway.... as long as you don't live in california. http://www.examiner.com/article/cigarette-smoke-wafting-onto-neighbor-s-patio-brings-lawsuit

I'd like to say that with my neighbors and i are cordial enough with each other that if something like this really became an issue they would come say something to me, and would probably do the same thing your doing. But it goes both ways, i would only do this because I think that if there was an issue that they were causing they would be kind enough to also try to accommodate.

I can see where you're coming from not wanting to have any static with the neighbors and there are times when I fire up the smoker in my backyard and feel a bit bad due to the volume of smoke but at the end of the day my neghbors are cool so I don't sweat it much. I am not nearly as close as it sounds like you are to my neighbors but I won't hesitate to do as I please in my own yard either. If they're cool otherwise besides the smoke then I would probably try to accomodate but if they're the type that just gripe to gripe then I'd not think twice about firing up the pipe in my backyard.
