Dovo Shavette

Is the Dovo Shavette razor any good? I was just AOS and picked up one. I want to try my hand at using a straight and thought maybe this would be a good starting point before investing in a decent straight.

If you got the right technique the Dovo will shave ok. But I'm afraid that it's a total different way of shaving then a straight. IMO a shavette for a beginner is far more difficult to shave with then a well honed straight. Is there nobody from the forum that lives near you and can lend you a straight to try out? I wouldn't invest a lot of money into something you're not sure about if it's your thing. But chances are that once you try a straight you'll love it.

Because a shavette is more difficult than a real straight I actually suggest learning with one, master that and when you make the inevitable leap to real straights you will have already developed a great technique so you can focus on stropping, honing and alike without having to worry about user error when it comes to the shave

IMHO, as one who uses only disposable blade straights, the Dovo is not worth using at all. The blade holder is nothing more than a piece of plastic, and I don't think it hold the blade secure enough. Plus the price is quite high.

Take a look at the Parker shavettes, for under $20 bucks you can get a really nice shavette, and a few Shark blades. The holder is stainless steel, and overall its a well made razor. There's nothing at all wrong with using a shavette type straight. They're much sharper than a regular straight due to the DE blade, a regular straight can't be honed to the sharpness of the DE blade. That's why the shavette is called less forgiving, but once you get the technique down with using one, the shaves are very close. Like a regular straight, the shavette is still an open blade razor, and excellent shaves are possible using one.
