Donnie Darko

I watched this movie a few days ago and still can't decide if I liked it or hated it. Has anyone watched any other movies that made them feel this way? Also if someone could tell me what the hell Donnie Darko was about I'd much appreciate it.

it had its moments but the whole thing with the rabbit really irritated me. if you want to see a quality time travel movie look no further than Primer

Donnie Darko... Loved it. Quite puzzling.
Did it happened? Was it a dream? What is that crazy rabbit?
According to Eistein, time and space are on a continuum. But then again where is the plane with the missing engine.... parallel worlds.

There is supposed to be another one coming out from the sister's perspective.

Primer is a fantastic film and I also recommend it heartily.

I do have this one question, however, with all due to respect to those reading this: if one is confused by Donnie Darko, why do you think they'd like/understand Primer?

As for DD, the director's fiddling with the film, flat-out confusion regarding his own messages and subsequent creative failures indicate he achieved an astounding bit of beginner's luck. Donnie Darko is a good movie but too many elements are overdeveloped, or underdeveloped, to make it great.

This is the defacto Donnie Darko FAQ, it may help clear things up for you.

I loved it.

If you liked Darko, check out Southland Tales Totally incongruent cast for the type of movie it is, but it's along the same vein as Donnie Darko, but a bit more accessible at first glance.

Adaptation is probably another polarizing love/hate/notsureyet type of movie. I dig it.

Same for another Nick Cage movie Bringing out the Dead which I love, and used to play at work at the video store all the time due to it's stellar soundtrack. It's hard to get into because it doesn't so much have a plot arc or train of thought so much as a trainwreck of thought, but I think that it's one that If you like it you like it alot. My girlfriend said this movie bored her so much that she thought she would never be unbored again.

Did you try watching it again? A lot of times that helps with these types of movies. My simplistic take on the movie was that it is about the title character's difficulty in accepting the multiple outcomes of the event that changed all the character's lives. I think it is more a story about the inner struggle than about what actually happened.

That said, a more straightforward movie that is pretty underrated is mentioned just above, Southland Tales. That one will leave you thinking, but things are tied together a bit better.

+1 - But the rabbit thing was pretty creepy. Not that I like rabbits, but it almost put them up there with clowns on my list. I never looked at clowns the same after I saw Steven King's IT. I never look a rabbits the same after I saw Donnie Darko.

I personally think the achievement behind Primer first and foremost is what makes it such a compelling film. yes, it's confusing as hell but considering it's a $7000 movie Shane Carruth should get director/producer/writer/editor/sound designer of the decade. at the end of the day I think this is what makes Primer enjoyable - the fact that you have to watch it multiple times just to get a sense of what's going on. i've seen Donnie Darko once and don't think i'll watch it again.

Terrible movie. The only entertainment I ever got out of if was getting my idiot roomate who was obsessed with it to try to explain what happened. Talk about a train wreck .

I'm still on the fence about Donnie Darko, too. Saw it a couple years ago.

Along the lines of time travel movies, anyone seen "Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel"?

I watched it a while back and thought it was clever - it's a comedy. The tagline on the movie case is "Dr. Who meets Shaun of the Dead," which seemed pretty accurate to me.
