Do kamisori like finer grits?

So far, I've honed my Henkotsu once, and touched it up once. I used the technique demonstrated by gssixgun on YouTube. I used 3um and 1um lapping film, followed by stropping. Both times, the blade has gotten incredibly sharp. I'm wondering, though, whether or not some finer grits would make it significantly sharper. If they did, would that sharpness wear off in the middle of the first shaving pass, or would it last longer?

What say you, honemeisters?

what you are doing is perfectly fine...... the 1um with a piece of paper under it will give you a awesomely sharp edge that will last as long as any......

i personally use the pink *(3um) then the green *(1um) then back to the pink with paper under it.......

just finished honing a kami for otto using this method....

The sharper the better. The method you choose is up to you :) but generally the finer the better IMO.

I have been wondering the same thing. alx

Would a 10K grit equivalent piece of lapping film be sufficient at setting a bevel for Kamis? I may just start with the Botan that I have but on JimR's blog Mizuochi-san uses a 8k grit stone to set the bevel so I was thinking of using that sage advice. I have a new coti coming my way which I will use later but for now I have Jnats and 10,15,20K equivalent pieces of lapping film. I got a decent edge with botan-> Mejiro-> Koma-> tomo-> water Asagi Kitta on one of my gold dollars. I don't want to take it to the Chosera 1K just yet.

You should be able to get it up to speed starting with the botan. A kamisori is just like any other razor, and a bevel set is a bevel set. A 10k will take long time to set a bevel.

So Kent.....
Hows your kami doing ;)??
I read your thread also....I have an iwasaki on the way... So I was curious. Ill try the botan with the other kamis I have first then. The bevel thing Ive heard multiple ways of establishing it hence the question. Thanks!

Bevel setting on kamisori is real easy with coticule and nice thick slurry , then jump on Jnats and finish the job.
If you want to use synthetics use 5-6k stone then go up.
Sometimes if serious repairs are needed one has to go down to lower grits.

It's going well! Brian's modern steel and modern hardening makes a very hard steel, harder than my vintage Kamisori for sure:smile:. Just need to decide on tape or no tape before the next session.

Just tried a damp piece of paper under the film. Right off the film, the blade seemed much duller. After stropping, though, it was sharper than after the whole paper-free business. I haven't tried dish soap yet. Thanks for the tips.

Now, which soap/cream should I use for today's shave? I'm leaning toward Valobra or Castle Forbes.
