Dirty Bird scuttle on the way

I've been using a makeshift scuttle for a while (two bowls, basically). After reading the thorough reviews here of the various scuttles available, and a nice advance from an editing gig, I've ordered a standard scuttle from DBP. Blue glaze.

The reviews here have been most helpful for all of my shaving purchases. Thanks, guys.

You will be very satisfied with your DB purchase. I have one and have used it for about three months and would not shave at home without it !:001_tt1: It's very, very effective at keeping just hot tap water ready, ( very nice and warm ), for at least four passes,as a matter of fact when I do shave with just a puck without warm water it really feels funny and more than a little uncomfortable!!

Aww man, I must admit, I'm jealous :blushing:

I decided I was going to purchase a scuttle, if I wasn't going with a local artisan - A regular sized green DB would be on its way here!

That's a good move, you'll be glad...but let me qualify a bit...

People generally say "you'll be glad the first time you try it" but my experience with my DB scuttle is that the Ah Ha moment comes with the second pass.

You whipup a bowl of lather and apply it for the first pass - it is warm. While you are shaving the brush and lather are picking up more heat in the scuttle.

Now the second pass...that's the hook.

Scuttle arrived today. What a fine example of craftsmanship and detail. I'm looking forward to christening it tomorrow morning! :w00t:

I like my standard green DB scuttle. It's good to soak your brush. You can bowl lather in it although it is as small as I'd go for that. The scuttle can dry out your soaps, but creams usually stay in good toasty shape. I only fill halfway with hot water for my soaps. Enjoy!

This has been discussed before, I'm sure - my only problem with the scuttle is that my master bathroom water isn't hot enough. It's on the opposite side of the house from the water heater. It's hot enough for me to shave and shower with, without having to throw the faucet control all the way to the left, but not scalding enough to heat the scuttle up nicely.

I should get a better run from the guest bathroom sink, and I suppose I could pour the remnants of the kettle water (for morning coffee in the FP) in there. Any other suggestions that don't involve microwaving? I can't stand the thought of that thing in the microwave, I don't care how safe it is.

My new dirty bird arrived today. I opted for the regular size. Man what great work and Julie was a pleasure to deal with.

The DB is heavier than my Georgetown and holds 3x the water. It simply exudes handmade craftmanship and quality.

Which Georgetown do you have? Didn't they recently revise their design to hold more water?

I just ordered 2 DB scuttles (one for me and one for bro - trying to get him into this, if not, it will be in BST in a couple months) and a shave bowl for when I travel.

Asked Julie to do horizontal and vertical grooves in it like some others requested.....cant wait now....am using a poor mans scuttle at present consisting of 2 large bowls, it works but by the time I get to 3rd pass its all out of heat.

Now I just have to be patient.....:tongue_sm

Just received a blue DB scuttle yesterday and enjoyed it thoroughly.
Didn't request the vertical and horizontal grooves; just got the stock swirl throughout the bowl. Is the difference significant? Honestly I'm so excited about getting new stuff (I'm a wetshaving newbie) that I wouldn't have waited the 3 weeks or so for a custom job... but just curious. Who knows, I might pick up a second scuttle down the road, so it's good to know.
Sorry if this is already an old subject - lots of messages to navigate around here. :)
Thoughts?

Congratulations on your purchase. You'll love it and wonder how you ever shaved without it!

Have you tried turning up the heat on you water heater? That worked for me.

I have one of the newer models. I've had it since about March. I think it's a Gen 4.

I used the new DB this morning. There was a big difference in the temperature of the lather. It felt hot like lather just out of a barbers lather machine. The groves in the DB are deeper than the GT and it also seemed that lather was a bit faster to make.

Thanks for the reply. I'm undecided between the two of them. I use a large cereal bowl for my lather bowl and I'm afraid both of them might be too small. That has me leaning towards the double size DB. Regardless, I'm trying to hold off until next month.

LOL I discovered this too got a surprise all my lather disappeared :frown:,I was using very hot water.

I got a blue regular on Monday,if I never used it,it's still a great looking piece of pottery.Shipping to Ireland was reasonable considering the weight and had it in a week after ordering.

I have a GTP v4 (pic below).

Great scuttle...and does have increased water capacity from earlier versions...but still nothing compared to DB or SarahBonnyman Moss scuttle WRT how much water they hold.

I believe the GtP is an 8 ounce and the others are in the 10-12 range. I'm going to get a Moss in a few months to compare the diff.
