What's new

Did a 3 hr cleaning but I'm not very convinced it's the best it can look.

I can't seem to get that brown stuff off of the knurling. I'm not sure if that's the plating coming off or some strong gunk. It seems like it's gotten less after the cleaning but I'm not sure if that's just the picture, my imagination or it's actually coming off a little bit. What I did was:

  • Boiled water, poured it over the razor, added a hefty amount of Dawn dish soap, mixed it together and let it sit and soak for about 15-20 minutes.
  • Scrubbed with a new toothbrush and toothpicks
  • Did a warm water and soap mix again, and let it sit again for ~15 minutes.
  • Second scrubbing with a toothbrush and toothpicks
  • Sprayed scrubbing bubbles onto the razor and let it sit for about 5 minutes.
  • Scrubbed again with the toothbrush and toothpicks
  • Polished with Nevr-dull
  • Rinsed under water
  • Wiped off with a dish towel
Is this the best the razor is going to get? Is there a way to get whatever off of the knurling or is it the plating coming off? I feel like I've seen so many posts of peoples razors that look completely different after they restore theirs and mine just looks almost exactly the same as when I started.

EDIT: I forgot to add the link to the pictures. I feel stupid. Here you go: http://imgur.com/a/RcieT

The more used razors I have bought, the more I realize that less is more. I typically only do a slight 'soak' with Scrubbing Bubbles, scrub with toothbrush, maybe a touch up with a toothpick and a wipedown with mineral oil. The nice thing is that scrubbing bubbles is also a sanitizer.

ditto

on the plus side, I find Nevr-Dull to be a pretty good product

That brown stuff I believe is brassing. My suggestion after cleaning a hundred or so razors is to never use "Never-dull". It's just gasoline soaked in cotton and there will come a time that you use it on a gold laqured razor and regret it. My suggestion again is to invest in either MAAS or Blue Magic chrome automotive polish. The razor & bumper/ wheels are made from the same metal. There's a fine line between cleaning a razor and pushing it to the edge of brassing.

I was unable to find maas and blue magic anywhere locally. Do you know which stores have them and in which aisles?

hahahaha - which aisles?

seriously, it might help if you let us know where you live so we can let you know what local stores may carry them. or, try ebay, that's where I got my Blue Magic.

the right polish can make all the difference, in the uk their is loads of metal polishes, i tried a fair few that useless on razors, absolute garbage, i then came across peek polish which is great stuff, i believe peek is similar to mass and flitz which seems to be the polish of choice for razor people in the usa.

Looks like plate loss to me (from your photos). Just use it and enjoy it. If you want a nicer looking one you can either replate yours or search out a nicer example.

As to where to find supplies......

Your profile does not say where you are located. You might want to update this so that you can receive better (more location centered) help from other members.

mothers metal polish work very well its a automotive product but works great on most metals. i even use it on my high end copper pots makes them look brand new i have also used 3m "finesse" on some of my metal items and it shines them up really nice its a auto buffing compound but works well on all things i even use it when i need to polish plastics then a glaze compound after. (used to work in auto industry had a car audio and performance type shop), as said though if its not there it will not polish out.

When it comes to these cream polishes? How much do you use? Because these tubes are quite pricey for their sizes (2 oz for $6) and how long do these tubes usually last?

just a small bit the size of a pea or less... also i forgot to recc jewelers rouge it works very well for polishing metals as well.

Thank you very much :001_smile I'm going to go get some MAAS today because I've seen it recommended countless amounts of times. Hopefully it produces better results than the nevr-dull did.

Thanks for the tip. I got some Peek at the weekend and it did a good job on my Slim, HD Rocket, Super Adjustable and a couple of other razors. Sorry about the lack of pics - I'll try and rectify that

yep its the best stuff i have used, all the rest have either been useless or will damage the plating, brasso is one that is everywhere but will damage the plating on a razor.

I think you're stressing too much over it. That razor looks damn good to me.

I mean it is probably twice as old as me and a lot of other posters on this forum.

If you want something to just keep on a shelf and look pretty in the box, then just have it replated. If you want to shave with it, then that's about as perfect as you should expect.
