Derby Razor Blades - Lame

Lame is the French word for blade. Not sure if that's relevant, but as lame as Derby might be, I still keep a quantity that I bought years back. I think I might be able to manage one shave per blade.

It's odd that when I first joined this forum everyone sang Derby's praises and I thought they were good for 4 shaves.

We are a fickle bunch aren't we unless the QC at Derby has gone downhill?

I always remember the first rule of this game is YMMV. If you don't like something you can bet your bottom dollar someone else will.
Cheers

+1 on that. I still think Derby Blades are fantastic. It's amazing to witness the changing tides on B&B.

Internet "truths" often emerge because someone found something and keeps repeating it. The herd mentality on online forums does the rest.

Derby blades were the first I made a bulk purchase of. I also read many people liked them. Wrong! Now I use them to scrape paint from windows.

When you complain about different blades, are you sure it's all about the blade? How is your preparation, technique etc? If you have exactly the same prep, lather, razor, technique I can get your view. Then the next question is whether you have figured out if you have to use certain combinations of razors/blades to get your desired shave. A blade can be mediocre in one razor and good in another one.

New guy here (I'll get over to the Newbie section in a minute). Long-time wet shaver, but new to DE. I started about two weeks ago with Derby blades because many recommend them as a good starting point. No real nicks (a few weepers), but MAJOR irritation, and it looked like I was, at age 53, developing a mid-life case of acne. (I may be one of the few who never had any skin problems with Mach 3 and Fushion, but I like the idea of a "classic" shave with DE). I wrote it off to my newness and the learning curve. Next blade up was a Wilkinson Sword -- shaves were starting to get pretty nice and NO lingering irritation. I chalked it up to improving technique. Tried a Derby again today...Same prep, same soap, same (hopefully improving!) technique. No nicks, no weepers, but my face is left with a burning sensation (3 hours later).

I know...YMMV. I think I may need a sharper blade. The Derby, today, seemed to pull on the hairs on each pass, whereas with the Wilkinson I could hear the blade smoothly slicing through the whiskers. I've got more blades to try, but I don't think the Derby's will get many more passes along my face...
