De Vergulde Hand Shaving

I must not be the only one who took advantage of the De Vergulde Hand Shaving Stick offer from WCS because they are out of stock now. How do I know?I went there to check on the spelling for this thread . I have had one shave and for the price I really liked the slickness of it. The soap could have been a bit thicker but all in all not too bad at all. Anyone else pick it up this week? Any opinions?

IMO, they are one of the best non-tallow option out there. LaToja is another one. I find the scent to light and just right. It would be a great addition at my local grocery store or pharmacy!

I have yet to find a soap that dries my skin more than DVH does. A very popular product here in the Netherlands but I really don't like it.

@Luc; usually I can agree with you but imo DVH is no way up there with La Toja. Not even remotely close but when you like it; good for you! (and good for our economy of course )

 We're all different! I think it's a pretty awesome product still!

I read about the drying on some older posts but so far no ill effects after using it a few days. But to be honest I also have been using the DH Harris Arlington After Shave Milk the last few days which might counteract any drying.I'll try another aftershave or cologne for a day or three and see what happens. But as far as slickness and cushion I think its pretty good.

I just got some DVH soap and have shaved with it for a couple of days now. The lather is thinner than some soaps, but somehow, it performs better than most. The razor glides smoothly, and I got a very close and comfortable shave. Unlike some have experienced, it was not drying. This is definitely a keeper. Can't wait until WCS gets more sticks.Dave

Yet another very slick, smooth and comfortable shave today with De Vergulde Hand, better than the high-priced soaps I have. That's three great shaves in a row, no irritation, skin feels great. I am buying the shave stick as soon as it's back in stock at WCS.

I haven't tried De Vergulde Hand shaving stick, but I was in Amsterdam in February and I bought their "puck" shaving soap in a tub. It has a very mild, if not unnoticable scent and it lathers very well. I do a lot of travel in my job and I keep the Hand in my travel kit.

I also bought their brush, which is packed in a hard plastic tube which is very good for travel also. The brush dries well in the open-ended tube and doesn't get smashed and deformed in my suitcase.

Dave it went out of stock fast.sgreenstreet I forgot to mention the scent. Yes a nice scent and more pleasing than Arko!! But the Arko is " slicker". I have been alternating them the last few days to compare.

After reading about De Vergulde Hand here, my main soap for many years I revisited it again. It's really cheap here, a stick or tub cost less than €2,- here in the supermarket and it's usually the only brand they have, hidden between many cans of foam/gel.
So I whipped up a lather, that familiar smell (not my favorite but it smells soapy clean), I miss the creaminess of a tallow soap but it lathers up easily.
It shaves OK, it's not the slickest but it does it's job letting my (straight) razor glide along my face.
After the shave I immediately noticed how drying this soap is, now I know this is what a soap does but this one did it more... The drying doesn't bother me that much since I always finish a shave with a splash and a good rubbing with raw shea butter but without the shea butter my face would be very dry.
So although I used this soap for many years, not knowing any better it will never be my favorite especially not since right next to the supermarket where I do most shopping there is a Turkish store that sells Arko and that only sets me back €1,50 so that is even cheaper, creamier, slicker and less drying.
It's not a bad soap and certainly better than the canned stuff (that's why I've been using it for years) but there are better option available IMO.
Still the best a man can get from the supermarket :D

Kind of like Williams and VDH in the states. I find them in the chain drug stores and even the mom and pop stores ,especially Williams. But DVH is mucheasier to use than Williams for sure. The VDH is just great for the price

My granddad used De Vergulde Hand. My dad used it. And I have been using it for most of my shaving life as well. Probably the most common shaving soap to find around here ;-)

It's very basic soap, but it does what it should do; create lather, and make shaving easier. My skin must have adapted to it in all those years, since I don't suffer from drying out or irritation.

I just ordered a tub of the fresh scent and another tub of the regular (I really like this stuff!) Scent is important... a soap can perform superbly, but if I don't enjoy the scent, I won't use it. DVH has a very pleasant scent that makes the morning shave enjoyable.

this stuff is.....NICE. i like this one. the holder is nice too. i think this might be my favorite stick so far. i might have to order more before they run out.

I just read that DVH has been around for over 450 years, suffice it to say I dont think they'll run out anytime soon.

Head to the Nine Streets for some good quality shaving soaps, or the Shaving shop in Breukelen.

Why do you dislike De Vergulde Hand so much??

I used it again this morning. It has a nice scent, creates a super lather, and it really makes the razor glide.
In my opinion, it performs as well as much more expensive soaps / creams (e.g. TOBS).
