What's new

Damn...................

Well I bought a second hand str8 and thought I'd follow some of the posts and first clean using soap, then bleach solution, then alcohol soak, then barbicide.
The razor has faux ivory plastic (possibly celluloid?) scale. While int he alcohol bath, the scales starting dissolving.

Anyone evey had this problem?

P---'d me right off.

Has anyoone every had this happen?
Now I have to replace the scales which were prefectly good!

Oh well, live and learn!

I'm sorry about your scales. Your cleaning regimen seems like overkill to me (no pun intended). Once you get rid of the dirt and detritus on an old blade, I would think a diluted Barbicide soak of the blade is all that is needed. I also would not put your scales into Barbicide -- It could stain or otherwise damage them. I know this does not help with your current problem, but in the future I don't think you need all of those steps. My understanding is that Barbicide kills everything. If I'm wrong, I'm sure I will quickly be corrected.

I wouldn't ever put razors in bleach. That's just asking for rust. As far as the scales go, soap and water, followed by Barbicide, is more than enough.

Well bleach is killing steel & alcohol quickly dissolves celluloid.
So like the above, soap & water scrub & the barbicide or rubbing alcohol on the blade only.

im not sure what posts said to clean using soap, then bleach solution, then alcohol soak, then barbicide - but especially with celluloid which is pretty unstable, you want to do the most gentle clean you think you can get away with.

remember - nothing nasty can survive on a dry blade for longer than 24 hours, so it pretty much disinfects itself in transit

I've ruined scales before but not due to cleaning. I'm always wondering about people's incredible fastidiousness regarding cleaning razors and blades. I can appreciate no one wants to get ill from using a infected razor.

Sounds like you followed *all* the posts, even the bad ones  I'm surprised your blade survived the bleach step, that's usually a good way to ruin a blade. Also I think chlorine gas is one of the ways to start the "celluloid rot" chain reaction. But with all you did to that poor razor it was inevitable that something in there would end up damaging the razor.

Just wipe the blade down with alcohol and polish it with flitz or maaz, hone it, oil it, and call it done. Bugs don't survive for long on bare dry surfaces, so there really isn't much to worry about.

On yeah, been there -- alcohol + plastic scales (or pretty much any type of scale material) = BAD

Most nasty germs/diseases can't last more than few days outside of the human body. For those that may have survived shipping/shelf time, a quick wipe of the blade with an alcohol or bleach wetted cotton ball should be more than enough to finish the job -- just don't get it on the scales.

If that's not enough to make you feel comfortable with using a used razor, you can also try barbicide.

If that still isn't enough, well, then it may be time to start pricing the cost of a seal home, a house-wide hepa filter system, drinking water imported straight from the artic ice cap, and a habitation bubble...

Well, look on the bright side, at least you didn't boil it.

Use this as an opportunity to get some really nice replacement scales. It's fate that wanted you to have them.
