What's new

D.E question

This is just a friendly discussion, I was wondering why people like Wal-mart, the dollar stores, old time drug stores, they all carry D.E blades but non I found sell the razor it self. I mean they have soaps,Brushes, Blades. So I'm like it's nice for people who already have the razor body. Buy the blades won't do much good with out the body. It's just my silly brain on one of those crazy trips. Lol.

It's a question many of us have pondered.

As best I can figure, the stores are offering a specialized product that people still buy. They wouldn't stock it, if it didn't sell.

It helps if you realize that the shaving isle is largely controlled by Schick/Wilkinson Sword/Energizer Holdings, and Gillette/Proctor and Gamble, and neither company has any interest in actually generating new business for DE blades.

They are both happy to sell DE blades to existing customers (while hoping they may switch over to more expensive systems), but certainly don't want customers to leave their high profit margin cartridge systems for a DE razor.

Yeah, I had the same thoughts when I noticed that my Walmart was finally stocking DE blades. Or maybe they had been all along and I had just never noticed until becoming interested in acquiring a DE razor. I eventually came to the same conclusion as MichiganLover.

I eventually came to the same conclusion as MichiganLover.

To further expound upon my thoughts above, most stores are going to deal directly with Schick, and Gillette for the products of their shaving isle. In order for them to offer a DE razor for sale, they would have to go way out of their way to track such a product down, as neither company offers this as part of their North American catalog**.

Considering that DE blades are probably a small volume item to start with, I can't see too many establishments bothering with such an undertaking.

If you consider who makes low cost entry level DE razors, sourcing them becomes even more difficult for a small volume seller. Such an item would need to be under $10 to be competitive, and the only sellers I can think of who offer items in this price range are Lord (of Egypt) and Dorco (of Korea).

Lord as I understand it doesn't want to deal with a seller unless they want to buy items by the truck load.

Realistically, the only company who has any shot at selling a DE razor in non-specialty US stores is Personna, as they already have existing business agreements with many stores. However, Personna is bankrupt, and likely will be bought by Schick.

**Note, that Gillette sells some DE razors in India/Asia, and Wilkinson Sword sells a DE razor in the UK.

I'll go you one better.

At my local grocery store, they sell Tweezerman badger brushes, but they sell ZERO products that can be lathered with a brush (not even The Real Shaving Company shaving cream).

Pray tell, what is the customer who buys the brush supposed to do with it?

There are enough older gentlemen out there still using their vintage razors to justify the stores carrying a couple packages of blades, but how often do they have to replace the razor itself?

I hussy kind of found it werd. But now you say it yea. The big names do fill the isle. But like the guy said about the brush. Same thing I went to a old drug store they had brushes, and D.E blade but nothing to use them with. Wooo I guess u rub the blade only on your skin and use the brush to wipe away blood between passes. Lol. That for the input!
Any way what is injectables? I never herd of them. Are pretty good razors to use?

I've always wondered why my local stores stock soap pucks and boar brushes and who, besides me, buys that stuff. Even more intriguing is that the old pharmacy down town stocks Clubman. No other Pinaud products, just Clubman and only a couple bottles in stock at a time. Who the heck in this small town besides me uses Clubman. I've thought about putting an ad in the paper "will the person buying Clubman please contact me at ......."
