Countdown to DE Day

Tomorrow I'm going to go get a DE razor at Mertz Apothecary (AKA smallflower.com) just a block away from me here in Chicago.

This will be my first safety razor since 1972.

For the brush and rest I've decided to start with the Van Der Hagen premium set which I got off Amazon.

I've narrowed my choices to Merkur 34C or EJ 89 Barley and wonder if any of you gents have any thoughts on either?

I started my DE journey with a 38C (longer handled version of 34C), but I also owned the 34C. Personally, I prefer the Merkur heads to the EJ/Muhle as they seem a tad more aggressive (in a good way), but I don't think you can go wrong with either razor.

Welcome. I have both the Merkur 34C and EJ89 Barley. As others have said, they are both fine razors and you won't go wrong with either. But for me, I find the Merkur 34C gives me a better shave. As always though, YMMV. Best of luck and enjoy your first shave.
