Coticule?

I have been honing with films for about a year and a half now, and am feeling like it is time to move on to something more natural. I love a keen edge, but think that getting a smooth edge is even more important. That led me first to consider JNats, but they are way out of my price range. I am thinking the logical next step in my journey is to get a coticule. The bouts from Superior Shave are the only ones I have found that are in my price range. Does this make sense? Is there anything I should be looking for?

My current go to razor is a TI with their super had carbonsong 135 steel. Does this change things at all? Should I be looking for a fast hone because of this?

What about size and shape?

Any and all information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

I think any coticule you end up with will be able to provide you with a nice smooth edge. It's just that some will get you there faster than others. Some of my slowest coticules have given me some of the smoothest edges, so don't let speed be the end-all be-all determining factor. Some may also be a little easier to work with than others, but figuring them out is half the fun!

One of my first coticules was a bout from Sup. Shave, and it was/is a wonderful stone, so I think you'd do quite well if you ordered from there. Good luck with your proposition, and definitely let us know if/when you need some help as you begin to use your coticule...

superiorshave if you live in the usa have lower shipping costs and coti prices aernt pricey...ardennes website coti's are lower priced but shipping is higher if shipping to the usa...

Thank you all for the great information. Please keep it coming!

This is a good point. I am not opposed to spending more time working with an edge, I am just worried, since most of my razors are very hard steel, that the process would be unbearably long if I get a very slow stone.

this is my opinion.. I would avoid the la grise , I had three of them and they were just to slow for me ask around on here and try and grab a nice quik one , check ebay out there are two nice ones mayned lapping up but they both belonged to barbers and they are just by the looks of them very similar to old rock if not old rocks , btw you can get cheap j nats scotts just posted a picture on one he only paid 69 dollars for, there most likely easier than coticule .

The problem I have is not so much with the price of the hone, but the nagura progression. I also like the idea of an all-in-one stone.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the difference (other than when it was mined) between a la grise and a vintage stone? Are the coticules on Superior Shave La Grise stones?

The difference is not when it was mined but where. As in the vein it comes from. La Grise with some exception are generally softer and slower than other layers more favored for use with razors.

a lot of the newer coticules at the moment are la grise as scott mentioned I found I didn't get on with them as there to soft and slow I just find some of the older ones harder and easier for me to get a keen edge . you may get on with them.. my favourite coticule is not quite vintage but maybe mined 2/3 years ago , and it was from superior shave , but its hard and fast and works brill on ti carbon steel .... the fun will start when you buy a coticule.

Ardennes is the supplier of coticule to the world. I suggest you either buy from a reputable source letting them know the stone will be used for razors or someone who specializes in hones for razors and related because his stock will be geared more toward razors than knives and tools or buy from someone you know of and can trust when they say a coticule is good for razors.

If you can master a coticule, you can get an edge off of anything. Get one from a member or off of superior shave and just start trying. It should be frustrating and then, suddenly, it will all just start to click.

I also learned honing on film and after over a year I purchased my first coticule then a jnat. I prefer narrow hones; my recommendation would be to get a 40mmx150mm. The coti should be flat and should come with a matching slurry stone. My experience honing on film was invaluable and the move to whetstones has been easy. The sooner you begin the better.
