I received my Classic HD "Barber pole" today and am excited to use it. I havent received my Proraso, Derby blades, and brush yet. Is it ok to start using my razor using Gillette gel shaving cream or should I wait for all the right gear.

Welcome. I'd say it's your call. You'll get a better shave when you're using all of your gear, but the practice would be good for you, too.

just take your time, dont do long strokes, dont go over the same place alot, oh and just let the razor glide against your skin; not like you have not already heard all of this from mantic on youtube. but his advice is great advice.
let me know how it goes for you.oh i wouldnt shave against the grain yet though:thumbup: have fun

Welcome to B&B! Give it a shot and +1 on the go slow with good angle and no pressure. I would also make sure you moisturize well after you are done.

Welcome to B&B. There's nothing wrong with going at it with what you have until your "real" gear arrives. It'll help you get the feel of your new razor. As has been mentioned take short strokes, and use no pressure at all. :thumbup1:

Welcome to B&B Dib!
Do not worry: each of us was a "complete newbie".
Good choice about the razor, the 38c Barber Pole is an excellent shaver.
You can try it immediately, without waiting to get your cream and brush.
It would be a way to start your DE shaving experience.
Hope you will have fun!

If you have just the razor different in your daily routine then you will get to see just how much difference it makes. Actually I envy you as you can control what you change slowly. I went hell for leather changing this that and the other till I didn't know what worked or what I liked!

Welcome to B&B BTW. :thumbup1:

I think we all new I was going to use it anyway. Is AS a must or a preference to WS. I have never used it in the past. Is there something I can pick up at the grocery store or should I be more picky. All I really know is NO alcohol.

Welcome to B&B! It's probably better to wait, but if you've gotten this far, you probably won't be able to...

Real shaving creams are leagues ahead of the commercial stuff...

Good luck!

AS is not essential....I went about 6 weeks using a DE before I got any...but it seems to add that little extra finishing touch! :001_smile You can just finish with a cold water rinse. Off the top of my head, balms are more likely to be alcohol free.

cold water +1, now alot will tell you oh no dont do that, but
pinaud clubman has alcohol in it, alot of aftershaves do,
alcohol will cleanse your face after shaving and will help
you keep from gettin in grown hairs and bumps but
on the other hand it can dry out your skin, i havent tried it yet
but everybody uses witch hazel its dirt cheap to at wally world

To update you all. My first shave was incredible! Not a single nick and I shaved my head as well. This is only with my new razor, I cant wait for my brush and cream to arrive. For the first time in a long time my face didn't kill me when I was done. I can already tell the healing process has begun.
