What's new

casual dress: preppie

wasn't sure what to call this look but was wondering what how many of you dress this way? I was thinking of a wardrobe that consisted of chinos and/or corduroy pants, oxfords or loafers, a cardigan, dress shirt and tie. if you watch the show Criminal Minds, the actor Matthew Gray Gubler, aka Dr Spencer Reid, usually wears some variation of this on the show. although, I think he wears chuck taylors rather than oxfords or loafers. got any tips or rules of thumb I should follow?

I'm definitely more of the preppy look than anything. I do wear t-shirts with science related themes, but most of the time, especially during the winter, you'll see me with a argyle sweater vest, tie and button down on the top and dark jeans on the bottom. Chuck Ts, white Sambas or brown loafers.

My Mom makes fun of me because she says I look overdressed or that I should dress my age or I'll never be attractive to girls my age. I guess that means girls my age don't know a good thing when they see it !

As long as you leave that collar down and, as Mark said, do not tie a sweater around your neck, it is fine. Oh, and stay away from AE, HCO, and AF.

I switched to this style a few years back. I almost always wear buttoned shirts, sweaters, chinos or cords, and prefer Oxfords and wingtips to loafers.

My advice is to keep it simple and classic. A plain white shirt is always in style and always will be. It goes with everything and can be dressed up and down. Plain blue shirts are classy, too, as can be several conservative stripes. I avoid wearing darkly colored shirts, though I do have two plain black ones I like. Avoid most patterns - they start to look dated.

For the pants, go with unpleated and uncuffed. The cut should be based on your body type - don't go with a bootcut if you aren't skinny, etc. Have a tailor hem your pants or learn to do it yourself. This one little trick makes your pants look great.

Stay very conservative with shoes. Brown and black are all you need, as well as matching belts. Buy the highest quality, plain shoes you can find, leather soles preferred. I have had a good pair of wingtips since 1990; they still look good and I have had them resoled a couple of times.

For outerwear, a plain, single breasted and single vent navy blazer is a must. Pick up a trenchcoat, topcoat and/or peacoat for heavy weather. Try to buy wool coats, though some cotton ones are nice. If you want a leather jacket, pick a classic A2 bomber-style. They've been fashionable for 70 some years and always will be.

A few brands I like are J. Crew, Martin+Osa and Brooks Bros. Look for sales and don't be ashamed to shop on eBay and thrift stores. I do. You can get excellent clothes and shoes for pennies on the dollar. Have the clothes hemmed and professionally cleaned. No one will know they're secondhand and you'll look great.

Interesting.

The preppiest look I wear is a polo under a v-neck sweater. And the polo is only there for structure. The sweater bc its cold. And I still wear jeans exclusively. I wear bluchers though.

Just don't tie a sweater around your shoulders and you should be fine.

you mean like this

Uncle Erik's post is pretty much spot on. When I switched over to this look around my senior year in high school, I was worried that it would look like I was forcing it too much. I definitely didn't want to do the scarf or the tie underneath the v-neck cashmere, so I kept it simple. White dress shirts, sleeves rolled to half-forearm, flat front, uncuffed pants, and you're good to go for all seasons. Winter time get cashmere v-necks to go over your dress shirt (keep the sleeves down and buttoned), get a black or navy (or both) peacoats, and you're good. Summertime get some sperry boat shoes, and you can keep wearing the dress shirt with rolled sleeves or get some solid (no stripe) polos.

I thought people would make fun of me, but I get more compliments about my dress than anybody else. I get a lot of compliments from men around campus actually, which is a bit suprising ("I like the pea coat man, where'd you get it?"). I get complimented by sorority girls in every class I have almost every day, so to anybody who makes fun of this style or believes any hot girl is going to be turned off by this style, then think again. It's a throwback to a classic dress for men, and I think that's why I get compliments. There's way too many men walking around campus looking like they haven't bathed in 5 days.

Also, you have to make sure everything fits correctly, or it just doesn't have the same impact. Make sure your pants are the perfect length (no bunching up at the shoe like everybody else does it. Make sure your dress shirts have that "military" fit (no bunches around the waist, form-fitting (you can buy shirt garders for this, and they work great).

I'll pick up the occasional bit of clothing from the Gap for this. the other day I got a pair of trousers on clearance for $20 (marked down from $60) and they fit perfectly. i've also got a couple of their fitted dress shirts which are nice and snug :thumbup1:. but, I will only buy from the Gap when they have their clearance sales.

incidentally, I stopped by Banana Republic after my trip to the Gap and was disappointed at the lack of sale items AND that the sales guy that was trying to help me didn't know what a herringbone pattern looked like. I specifically asked if they had herringbone trousers and he proceeded to show me a pair of houndstooth trousers and a window pane suit. I left mildy irritated and a bit confused as to why he didn't know what the heck he was talking about and why he was showing me a window pane suit.
