What's new

Can't resist the occasional Hone Lot Gamble, a breakdown.

Yeah, it doesn't perform like my Yellow Lakes (I've owned a bunch, but all black). Or most of the Purple w/ green orb stones I've had in the past (which usually had much larger green orbs). I'd guess I've had this material before, but probably never bothered to test it so much as this one because they weren't this large... and my rule with slates is basically:

Is it as good as a Thuri? Great, new mystery hone for my collection.
Is it ballpark/maybe as good as a Thuri but not as fast? Eh, resell it as a decent finisher. I have larger Thuri's.
Is it good but not as good as a Thuri? Dump it in hones lot.
Is it some slate trash that isn't good at all? Dump it in a garage/tool stone lot or put it in my garden.

This would fall into the second category... except I don't have any larger Thuri's, so it's probably gonna hang around.

This is my purple YL, which does indeed have much larger orbs. Or in this case - one big orb down the end.

It’s fairly different from the normal dark blue-grey-black YLs; harder, finer, and a very good razor finisher, though still not quite at Thuri level (imo).

That stone I assume came came from the area around Llyn Melynllyn. The normal YLs are mostly from Aberfelleni I believe, which is still in Snowdonia but a fair bit further south.

Shave off the 8" Reminds me a lot of what I remember from Black La Lune and similar looking stones (purple with that holographic striping) in the past. Leaves a nice sharp edge that's quite comfy, but not super skin-friendly. Definitely a good razor finisher, but I'd call it a step down from a Thuri.
