Camel shaving brushes?

Hey, this is my first attempt at posting in thus forum so here goes. I recently got into wet-shaving and purchased the van der hagen luxury set. When i showed my dad the brush, he said that the best shaving brushes are camel fur/hair/thistle, whatever it is. I was wondering if that twas true? Is it possibly that that was the best but no longer used? Im just curious. If it means anything my father was born and raised in Mexico in case there is a regional distinction.

A quick internet study on my part found they make excellent paint brushes and cosmetic brushes but retain too much water and lack backbone making them a poor shaving brush.

Never heard that one before. You sure he wasn't pulling one of those Calvin's Dad trolls?

Sorry, my joke was a lot funnier to me when I was going on 3 hours of sleep and about to go to bed.

That's OK, camel brushes are not made from camel hair. It is a corruption of the German word kemel.

So shaving brushes are not made from camel hair. Camel hair brushes do not contain any camel hair.

Alternative animal hair brushes could be an untapped shaving sales niche. Why stick with your boring old badger/boar/horse/synthetic, when you could have, say, goat, groundhog, zebra or squirrel?

Squirrel you say? Someone with an entrepreneurial spirit could make a killing in my neighborhood. Get it?

Mine too. It is labelled by some as "squirrel's paradise". We have the usual greys and large population of black squirrels. Those are kind of odd when you first see them. So if you want to start a company to make squirrel brushes and would like to offer some variety, PM me (ooooo, some rare black squirrel hair, I'll pay 2x more for that!)

You are most correct. Upon further research the term 'camel hair' is a misnomer. Camel hair is not suitable for any kind of brush as its' properties are far too wooly to be effective. Camel hair used in cosmetic or paint brushes is generally a natural animal fur but not that of a camel. Well done Sir!

I started wet Shaving this February at age 39 and asked Dad if we've any shaving brushes at home. He dug out this brush and said it's a camel hair shaving brush! It's at least 25 years old! It surely is not boar hair because there are no splits. Maybe horse if not camel. Recently bought a 26 knot boar brush, this camel hair brush completely out performs, less number of swirls on the soap and LOTS more lather. Was on Google searching for camel hair brush and found this thread!
