Burt's

OK, while I'm waiting on my BD stuff to arrive.. the only soap or cream I can find local is... Burt's Natural Skin Care for Men Shave Cream (or soap). In looking through the few reviews I could find it either get's one star or five. It's either the worst cream/shave anyone has ever had or it's the best shave soap anyone has ever had! I plan to use it with my current Mach 3's just to get away from the can foam stuff for now.

What do you guys think?

It's a non-lathering cream. Decent scented, but nothing amazing. I detest non-lathering brushless creams, so I found it to be a useless product.

I think it's overpriced for what it is.

Do you have a Bath and Body Works nearby? The C.O. Bigelow Premium Shaving Cream is stocked by them; it's the world famous Proraso shaving cream, just in a different box. :tongue_sm If you have a BBW nearby, this would be the product to buy.

+1 for the Bath & Body Works CO Bigelow - there must be one in Ohio somewhere :wink2:

Also, check out your local Rite-Aid and pick up a tube or three of the Real Shaving Co shaving cream. This stuff whips up into a fine lather and is supposedly made by the same company who makes the creams for TOBS, Trumpers and T&H.

I'm one of the few people around here that likes Burt's Bees shave cream ... while its not a regular part of my rotation, I do like to take it traveling with me.

The fact that it doesn't lather is a moot point. Its not supposed to lather. It still gives me a great shave every time, it smells good, its relatively cheap.

I especially like their bar soap ... I use it all the time, no matter what else I'm lathering up with.

If Burt's Bees is all you have for right now, then go with it. Don't pay attention to everyone that knocks it because it doesn't lather. If it works for you, then great ... if not, there are plenty of other products out there you can try.

thanks guys.. I picked up one of their travel kits for $13 and got a little of everything. Never thought about BBW there's a whole bunch of them around here. I'll check them out over the weekend.

btw, we have a C.O. Bigelow's that I did go into and when I asked the girl where the shaving stuff was she pointed to a little island and said that's what we have left! they did have display of Acqua di Parma but really did not want to start at that price point but it's on my list down the rod.

my barber put me onto using Paul Mitchell's hair conditioner (blue stuff) to shave with and it works great.

If you're in one of the smaller towns in central Ohio, it's possible that you may not be near any stores that carry traditional shaving creams, or even a Bath & Body.

I had a "travelling emergency" recently, and tried a product that I won't use regularly as I enjoy using a brush, but I used Neutrogena Skin Clearing shaving cream that is sold in Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, grocery stores, just about everywhere for about $5. It worked very well for me with my Merkur HD, but you have to know what to expect. First, it is a BRUSHLESS cream, period. Don't try to use a brush with it. Think of it as more like a gel, only it's white. Second, don't expect it to go on your face in thick, cream-like density. You have to smear it on in a very thin coat that won't even be solid white it's so thin, and dip your hand/fingers in water and rub over it to ensure you have plenty of moisture. Once you do, you'll have a slick coat that provides a very good shave. Leave the residue on your hand and re-apply with more water after each few strokes. Re-apply a little more cream the same way between each pass. I got BBS results, and a comfortable shave each time. I did have to rinse a few more times than usual to get the slickness off.

Good luck!

EDIT - I see you did find a BBW nearby.

I don't dislike it because it doesn't lather. i dislike it because it gives me a poor shave.

Aubrey Organics non-lathering brushless cream does a much better job, IMO.

Just a heads up, if you can't find any decent cream locally and it takes some time for the internet product to arrive, grab a puck of Williams (it's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be; actually it's one of the slickest soaps i know when lathered correctly) or get a can (yes, i said it....canned goo...i know, but better than nothing) of Barbasol. It might be cheap but it's also the best canned goo out there and comes closer to real shave lather than any other canned stuff.

Burt's smells pretty damn good. Can't bear to part with my half-tube even though I rarely use it. However, if you're in the pursuit of lather, it will be a disappointment. Enjoy it for what it is.

I understand that the Burt's doesn't lather (says so on their web site).. I stopped back into CO Bigelow's today and the place had a whole wall of shaving stuff. They even have a sink and mirror setup with tons of samples to try! I bought a tube of the COB shave cream (green). I even talked the nice lady out of a handful of AdP samples :thumbup1:

After reading the 'sticky' reviewing the shave creams I don't understand the need for a bush? They did have what seemed to me a nice assortment of bushes at COB.

+1
I generally don't care for citrus scents, but Burt's is an exception ... I especially like the smell of their bar soap.

I don't care that it doesn't lather ... as long as it shaves well and makes my skin feel good, that's all that counts.

A brush will whip a cream or soap into a nice lather, look at some of the tutorials on making lather to get more detail. It's the brush combined with a cream or soap that makes up a big part of the wet shaving experience. I know quite a few guys who have switched over to using a brush even though they are uninterested in a DE or straight.

The bush gives you a place to hide behind when you're shaving naked.

But seriously folks, one example for me is Nancy Boy Signature Shave Cream. You don't need a brush to use it, but if you DO use a brush, add some water, and lather, it is 100% improved.

I'll +1 the brush. I have been using The Body Shop Maca Root and CO Bigelow. The maca root is pretty similar with or with out a brush. The CO Bigelow was blah if not bad with out a brush, today I used a cheap VDH brush with it and its a HUGE difference!!

I find the burts bees foamless stuff to work quite well for me. It is the first cream that does not irritate my face. the only thing is it doesnt rinse off of a mach 3 very well

A brushless cream?!?!?

A cartridge razor?!?!?

ARE YOU MAD?!?!?

....cause I'm not :biggrin1:

Whatever works for you man, like with everything else YMMV. But I must say, if you haven't given a DE or Straight, badger or boar, or a proper soap or cream a real chance yet, you're missing out.

There are so many amazing AD's to be had!

And by the way, Welcome to B&B!

I couldnt find proper shave soap where I was at, and the only brush avalible was a useless homemade one. I do plan on buying a tweezerman synthetic brush and soap, along with a straight razor. but considering this was the only stuf i used so far that didnt burn my face off, it was the best stuff I used so far
