Blades Available in Hong Kong?

Hey all,

So next week I'm going on a trip to Hong Kong. :w00t::w00t: I'm a little excited. :001_smile

But for ease of travel my girlfriend and I decided to only take carry-on luggage. The only problem is that I can't bring DE blades on carry-on.

It won't be a huge deal to buy a disposable razor there just to shave on the trip, but I was wondering if anyone knew if there are any commercially available DE blades in Hong Kong. If some were available in stores there, I could just pack my Gillette Tech and buy the blades there.

Don't know how many members live or frequent Hong Kong, but I thought I would ask.

Thanks!

I would have thought that the Gillette Super Thins and Super Thin Platinums would be available there. The addresses listed on the packets are Thailand and Shanghai respectively.

They are excellent blades.

Thanks, I hope you're right. :thumbup1: I think I'll be taking my Tech regardless as it's super easy to pack and comes apart to pack flat.

I never got a chance to look around too much whenever I was in Hong Kong. I think I remember seeing some Dorcos, Wilkinsons and some Chinese brands in Watsons.
As far as disposables, I've never seen such a variety as what's available there.

Awesome!! That sounds really hopeful. I've never tried Dorcos or Wilkinsons, but I've never really had a problem with different blades. I remember some felt and cut a bit differently, but I could always get a good shave.

Is Watsons a chain store?

Watsons is a chain of pharmacies. They're geared to selling beauty, personal care and health products. You can usually find one or a similar Manning's nearby.

Hi All,

Realize this is somewhat dated by the original posts, but it MAY be helpful to others....

Living in HK for about four years and JUST got back into DE shaving since December. Was finally able to bring my the Gillette Slim Adjustable I bought in the states (around Christmas) to HK in April..

Finding DE's in HK is not as easy as one may think but they CAN be found.. The chain stores like Mannings and Watsons DO NOT carry them. The only place it seems one can find them is in the older Chinese "Drug Stores". These are typically small "hole in the wall" type shops in the older sections of Hong Kong. In some cases, you may need a friend to help translate..

You will most likely find some DE blades from Shanghai under an unknown brand.... OR ....you may be able to get some "Gillette Blue Blades" like I found.. (apparently also made in Shanghai). I believe some MAY be vintage, such as the ones I found, as they have a suggested selling price of about $.25 USD (in RMB), but the shop sold them for about $3.00 a box of five...

I used to go to Hong Kong maybe 4 times a year and I lived in China for 2 years.Agree that Mannings and Watsons may not carry anything like you are looking for.

And I used to find all sorts of stuff at the Chinese pharmacies I couldn't find anywhere else. Or even the little hole in the wall shops that sell scissors and shoe polish and nick knacks.

For the local population shaving is almost not necessary. Not much facial hair there.
It's the expats that have the trouble,or tourists like you.

I wouldn't get your hopes up as for finding anything new or exciting.:tongue_sm

But Hong Kong is a great place. Enjoy!

I can only agree, I have lived in Hk for three years now and the normal supermarkets or drugstores are no place to find shaving products.Local pharmacies are the best bet, Tabac and old Spice for example. Blades can be more difficult - I have so far only found them in the local household shops, not really what you find where the regular tourist goes.

Among the brands I have seen here is the Blue Gilette (shanghai made) the best bet. With some luck you might also find Astras. Price for a pack of 10 is around 1USD.

Here and there are also LÓccitane, C&E and Body shop..

EDIT: The "hole in the wall" pharmacies can be found even in the tourist quesrters in TST and Central, no need to go further to find them.
