Black handled Super Speed + Barbicide?

I just picked up a black handled super speed from the bay. I usually disinfect my vintage razors with barbicide, but I'm a little weary that this might affect the paint (which is in pretty great condition). Any thoughts on if this is safe? Also, would CLR be a fitting cleaner without affecting the paint? Thanks.

I am pretty sure that barbicide is safe for the paint. A lot of people recommend scrubbing bubbles as that wont effect the paint. I'm not sure about CLR though. Scrubbing bubbles has the added benifit of having a fresh citrus scent! :tongue_sm

10 mins in barbicide is all you need to kill the bugs. FYI SB WILL take the paint off of adjustables (#'s) so i would use caution w/any painted finishes.

i was told that it was safe for paint and used it with success on my red tipped super speed. do these razors use different types of paint or something?

By the way Mr. Pike, The 1701-A is the best! :tongue_sm

I haven't gotten the razor yet, but from the pictures it looks really clean, so I might not even need to use the CLR. I'll just disinfect with barbicide and polish it up with a jewelry cloth. Thanks for the info, mates. :thumbup1:

Dunno....I never had any problems with Red or Blue tip paint....but most definitely took the paint off the adjustables....I guess there is a chance they were repainted or touched up at some point....but twice?? I won't risk it again.

good info, I will make a mental note and get myself some barbicide for the future as I am sure that I shall be making more RAD purchases in the future.

The handle on a black handle Super speed is aluminum, and I believe that the black finish is anodized, and not painted.
Hard anodizing can withstand an almost unbelievable amount of abuse, but I'm not sure of the process on the Super Speeds.
When I soak in Barbicide, I submerge the head only for 15 or 20 minutes. I just don't see much reason to expose the entire razor.

But as with all things, it's a personal decision.

With TTO razors, I usually do the same thing. For some reason, I feel submerging the entire thing could mess with the moving parts (this is not founded on any logic, just pure paranoia).

my tto was extremely dirty for some reason. I had to scrub the painted tip with scrubbing bubbles for a while to get it clean. But it worked, and I didn't loose any paint in the process, and that's all that matters as far as I can see. However I did not submerge the razor in anything at any point, I just went right to It with the brush and with no prep.

I have a 72 Black Handle SS which my father gave me. I use it regularly and after a shave with it I have soaked it for about 3 minutes or so. I have not seen a visible fading or damaging of the SS. I think it would be safe. If you get the SS from and antique store or ebay 10 mins will kill all the critters and just soak for a minimal amout after each use.:thumbup1:
