At some point around 1978 the black handle got a different base plate and then the knurling changed soon after, I prefered the older ones, YMMV. I'd post a pic but I sold almost all my black ones.

He was asking about the Super Speed, NOT the Super Adjustable. The Super Adjustable got a plastic base plate in 1977.

Why yes, and that is the info for the SS, Steve. Base plate change was shape, not to plastic.

As nemo said, around 1978 the black-handled Super Speed got a different base plate with a knurling change soon after. The stamping changed to a "rectangular" depression in the base plate like the English-made Super Speed.

The Super Adjustable never had a plastic base plate, but did receive a plastic adjuster tang for the last few years of its production.

As to the OP's question . . . although there were running changes made in the head stampings, and the weight lightened a bit, the SS continued to be a very servicable shaver right up to the end of its production life. Everyone should at least try one!
